I have successfully rescued this from the father in law's garage, it's a Guardsman isn't it? the vapouriser is rusted into the mantle support but I'm hoping copious amounts of WD might release it, glass is broke but I hope it can be brought back to life.
A Guardsman indeed, Model X246 1954 to 1957 and perhaps the last well engineered Tilley so a good find and well worth a bit of TLC. The best way to release the vaporiser might be to heat to dull red and quench but not with the burner still fixed into the hood 'cos it's all too easy to destroy the enamel. WD40 is not really the best easing oil. By far the best is a 50/50 mix of actone and automatic trnasmission oil (ATF). Doesn't always mix too well so a shake before use and a good soak works wonders. ::Neil::
Ok got this to pieces, burner rusted through at the top, the mantle support rusted and threads fell off, glass broken, the pricker was stuck in the vaporizer and when I tried, gently, to separate them the pricker point snapped off inside the vaporizer leaving the point still rusted inplace, not doing so well so far.
Always, I have a few parts lanterns just in case. Bailed my a$$ out of more than one crack with a parts lantern. lol
WD40, in my opinion is not a good penetrating oil. It's good for some minor stuck parts but really hard stuck stuff is off the board. I have used a product called PB Blaster with good success. See no reason why Neil's suggestion would not work. I've found the key to success here is soak it for a while, don't rush it.
It's not really penetrating oil - it's mainly a water dispersant (hence WD). Yes, they took a while to get stuck together so they'll take a while to get apart!
Penetrene is what I use. It’s good stuff, but I’m not sure it’s available outside the Antipodes. Tony
@Buggerlugs "The Antipodes" was an expression often used by the British to refer to Australia and New Zealand (and places in the vicinity). The popular meaning was "the other end of the Earth". The correct use of "antipodes" is actually the place on the Earth that is diametrically opposite the point you are measuring from (drawing a line through the centre of the earth). So, the antipodes of the North Pole would be the South Pole; the antipodes of London is the New Zealand Chatham Islands; the antipodes of Melbourne would be Lajes das Flores in the Portugal Azures. Cheers Tony
It means, literally, 'opposite foot' (or possibly, feet) and refers to the other side of the world. As Tony said above, with capital letters it's actually a British term used to refer to Australia and New Zealand. Without capital letters, again, it's exactly as Tony says - the opposite side of the world. Dunno - surely there's an app...
There's a great web page Antipodes Map - Tunnel to the other side of the world where you tunnel to the other side of the world from where you are. From Blackburn your are in the ocean near nowhere. New Zealand is a long swim for you even if you was a fish. Blackburn is ok, stay there.
I've made a decision with this lamp I'm going to use it for parts only as the hood is rusted through in a couple of places as well, about all that is usable is the fount, pump, frame and control cock the rest is knackered. Now on the hunt for a donor from fleabay.
I'm somewhere between hell and happiness! I live in my own little world! Tra, la, la, la, la! (Who is that guy in the white coat and why is he trying to get in my garage?)
