Matty, hi, that is a good question. I pondered that myself today and looked in the gallery and there is a chrome model there with the same nut. I'm unsure. I normally would not change such a thing but if it was missing then that's possible. I'll look at more pictures and see as I am uncertain a bit too.
@Matty I have to check some documentation when I get home, but I believe the parts on this lamp are correct. It is possibly missing an aluminium label on the tank, but I am unsure if they had all the other changes before the labels appeared. The significant changes for this variation are the plastic pump knob, simple loop handle and the cap nut on the hood. I seem to remember that these variations were available with either a chrome hood or an enamel hood, but this is what I need to check. That would put this lamp in the late 1960s time frame.
I have two late model Aladdin 1As with that dome nut. One has the aluminium Aladdin sticker. Cheers Tony
Thanks all for the replies. This is a really neat looking lantern. As Nils points out this lantern is likely from the late 60's so it isn't an era I would normally look at. I like the hood nut and the pricker wheel. I don't like the plastic pump handle. I just went and had a look at an Aladdin 1A that I have here because I knew it had an enamel hood. Black. It appears to be the same as the lamp depicted in this topic other than the differing finishes on the hoods. Yes, mine has the same hood nut.
In Allin Hodson's book about Aladdin in Australia, there are a few pages about pressure lamps. I'm sure we know more now than what Allin wrote at that time, but there are copies of some useful paperwork. Among others is a price list supposedly from 1961. It is at least from before 1966 as it is still in £/s/d. Anyway, it lists a lantern in black and chrome or an all chrome one. The all chrome one is almost 10s dearer than the black and chrome one. In the parts list it only mentions one tank and doesn't say whether it is black or chrome. Here I assume chrome only. It also lists hoods in either chrome or enamel. The enamel one is about 12s cheaper. From this list I assume that you could get a chrome tank and cage with either a chrome hood or a black enamel hood. The pump rod is listed as chrome so this is probably from just before the bakelite pump knob. It is also from the period when the tanks had the Aladdin decal and not the aluminium sticker. From these indications I would guess that this lamp is from the mid 60s and is the all chrome option (the expensive option). There are still a couple of unanswered questions that aren't directly related to the lamp shown here. There is no mention of the black painted tanks, but they must have been from around the same time. They were at least from the black enamel hood era and before the aluminium stickers. The other thing is when did the aluminium stickers come in. I know they were there by the early 1970s.
Around 1950 has been the assumed time frame. I am guessing that ad is introducing the new version and trying to sell out of old stock of the green one. Hence it being 9s cheaper.
