Tilley X246b please help

Hi guys as a new member to the forum I have a pulsating x246b any suggestions to what is causing this I have given it the recomended 50 pumps. I have been brought up using these lamps and not come across this please advise.

Carbon on the pricker wire can cause that problem as can muck in the fuel feed tube, sometimes there is hardened muck on the inside of the tank which loosens when fresh fuel is put into the tank.

Do let us know how you get on.

 

Have you got enough paraffin in? I've found in the past, pulsating is usually down to the level of paraffin. You might need a bit more in

Hi and welcome to the forum. I had a similar problem and turned out, as Jeff has mentioned, to be muck in the fount and fuel pick up pipe.

 

Thanks for your reply I shall clean the picker tomorrow when cool as I'm sat out with my lamp this evening it's dated 1995 but is nearly new hardly been used.

Hi all I've stripped the tilley down cleared off the carbon thanks for the advice and is running slightly better but I still have an annoying pulsing while the lamp is running any suggestions thanks

Have you renewed any seals at all? Even with a nearly new one it's always best to renew them?

 

50 seems a bit low.

Being that the lamp is a late one ie: in the 90's, I'm wondering if the vaporiser is one that was made in China?
As I have heard alot about the problems with them, right here on this forum, just an idea.

 

There are 246B instructions that don't mention the number of pumps at start up.
THIS one does. Ten to warm it up and then another 90.

 

OOH - 90 - I usually stop at 60. Too many stories on here of bulged founts...

Pump until light output is good and steady..... but no more than 100 on a full tank

 

Easy to tell - you can see a small mig weld around the top (the "jet") some are good some are not so good.

This is the part of those instructions I don't agree with.

"NOTE: Periodic pumping is necessary to maintain a bright light. About 40 strokes each hour."

That seems way too much.

As KAB says, pump until light output is good.

 

I'm sure the instructions used to say 20. I run my TL10 quite regularly,
1.5 pints of kero + a total of 80 pump strokes gives good light for at least 2 hours. Only after maybe 2 1/2 to 3 hours do I need to give it another 20 pump strokes.
