Hi Everyone, I thought I would share my latest job lot with you. Is it me or do we see a shift away from collecting the past, not just lamps but many other things. Over here in Ireland we are seeing more and more collections going up for sale. Have we lost a generation of collectors? A question about 2 of the globes in the picture, is the one on the wall lamp a Tilley shade? and what would the pear shaped globe (on bench) been fitted to? it has Tilley Hendon on a shield on it. Also there are 2 mantles, 164H, what were these used on? Many thanks for sharing your expertise. Thomas.
Well @Madcollector you’ve fairly scored there. Your globe with the Tilley shield on it is extremely rare and would have been fitted to an early Tilley lamp or lantern. The mantles are for any Tilley and the large shade on the wall lamp you ask about is definitely not an original Tilley one. It will be interesting to see if anyone recognises it.
It may be due to the huge rises in the cost of living. In my opinion, the glass which is on the wall lamp was originally for a gas light/mains gas etc.. Those mantles were the last version of the Happy mantle and the metal rings are of poor quality, they distort with the heat and then the mantle falls off of the burner, if you have a mantle collection then in my opinion, that would be the best place for them. That is a great haul.
Blimey, that lot is a boost to any collection! The Veritas 350 is interesting due to its red hood - that makes it as very pretty lantern.
Can't be too sure if they all belonged to collectors. Possibly, the original owners who, weren't necessarily collectors, passed away. A large portion of their belongings had probably been sitting, collecting dust, simply forgotten in some dark, obscure storage, long unused even before their passing. Their next-of-kins or decendents weren't really interested in keeping them.
Hi Colin, Just had a look at the hood and it has been spray painted. Thanks for the offer of giving it a home but it's the only 350 I have.
Thanks Jeff, now you have got me thinking of starting another collection, MANTLES. I have been collecting stuff for 30+ years and have recently started adding to my lamp collection but now we have something else to have a go at. At least I'll be able to slip them past the wife.
Thanks Jean, would the Tilley globe been on a TL10? I've got one with no globe so might put it on it but I want it to be authentic.
Mantles don't take up much space and there are a great variety of them and the link below shows the 17 pages of mantles which are in the gallery. Mantles
The Tilley "teardrop" globe dates from the 1930's , 40's. So it depends on how old your TL 10 is. I wouldn't risk it on a working lamp.
Looks like to me you scored a fantastic job lot there, congratulations mate and enjoy your lamps, plenty of fun there that's for sure.
Looking closely at the Veritas, it's a P9955, not a 350 (the previous model) and as such it's somewhat of a rarer beast than usual although not rare per se. If the high level pricker needle is intact, be exceptionally careful handling it as its unlikely you'll ever be able to replace it! The red top and blue tank are not original but this it easily remedied. The hood was probably nickel plated and you might be able to see the original shade of paint under the blue. So, it's an even better haul than it was and it was pretty good already!!
