Made in October 1924 as seen on the date stamp (4 10). It still has the Q99-generator, and it works like a charm.
Wonderful lanterns and my all time favourite. 85 years old and still working like new. Serious quality engineering. Coleman never made anything better and very few other companies matched them with a lamp for life. Only Tilley made lamps then that will still work with just a new generator perhaps but they often need new seals. The Coleman often does not and the original seals still hold and function. ::Neil::
Yes, these are fantastic. Maybe not the brightest, but that's seldom what I'm after anyway. This one is perfect in most ways. Not too loud, easy fettled, and robust. (I'm a big fan of mica globes.) And no mucking about with a cleaning needle.
I'd always supposed the loop in the generator was meant to be positioned between the mantles, but it obviously doesn't matter...
Not really. The loop is to facilitate pre heating with two matches. Once the lamp is running it does not matter. In fact these lamps will run well with a Q77 generator which is a straight tube. Not so easy to light though. ::Neil::
I think the matches would have been longer than the ones we see now. I have lit one of these with two long Cooks matches though and they do work like that. Great engineering these. I have just tonight fired up the two French lamps I posted so I could show them running. Not been run for maybe 5 years but both fired up without any fuss or drama. Just simple and easy to run. ::Neil::
