    I have a small leak on one of my Petromax. It isn’t coming from where the graphite packing is used, but the nut before that. It’s very tight - am I missing a seal??

    @Buckaroo

    When that happened on a Petromax I was restoring, I carefully removed that hex fitting, cleaned all surfaces, and refitted the hex with some medium strength Loctite thread sealer.

    If I recall correctly, I may have also done one with copper or nickel slip.

    Cheers

    Sometimes, assembling this piece in the opposite direction could seal that up by purely metal-to-metal contact: IMG_7714.jpeg

    Couldn't remember the thread size but I recalled both sides being the same. One of them being a little more tapered than the other and has a more appropriately shaped shoulder below the hex part to mate better with the seat of the vaporizer port.
    Otherwise, some thread sealant could also do the trick.

    Not my trick - but it seems to work well - rub a bit of hard soap in the threads.

    I keep meaning to get some thread sealer so I’ll give the medium Loctite a go. Thanks!

    The part in MYNs post where the arrow points is mounted the wrong way (inside out). The tapered side shall make the metal to metal seal.

    It’s now leak free! Switching the hex section around worked a treat.

    Following advice on another discussion I also switched out the rapid preheater with one on a donor lantern. I get the feeling you never forget your first rapid preheat… it was very exciting :mrgreen:
