I've got some on order so I'll report back with my thoughts. Issues will be: single or twin tied, overall size when burnt in and quality.
Ditto. Mine are from eBay but they they're from China, not India. Link below. 12PCS VAPALUX MANTLES V42 FOR VAPALUX OR BIALADDIN LAMPS M320 PRESSURE LAMPS | eBay
Three quid for 12 - 25p each!! - including free postage from China. I wouldn't be expecting too much from them and if they did turn out to be crap, I wouldn't be getting too upset either...
Exactly as you said David, If they're OK, happy days, if not, it's only three quid - I think I can take the risk!
I’ve tested some Golden Anchor mantles on my single tie lanterns. They are cheap ones from China, and was pleasantly surprised. So far they perform well. They aren’t as delicate as the Peerless and seem to be somewhat flexible when touched.
I've bought a one or two Chinese mantles... OK, I went nuts and bought vast quantities over recent months, but my experience has been pretty positive overall. Half were the round pink and white single ties and half were the green and white Coleman 'sock' type and both have held up OK so far. The Chinese Coleman type mantles need careful burning in as they can be delicate until they've formed a good shape and I've wasted 3 or 4 before I got it right, but I've never had a problem with the round ones.
Nah, just two hours of patience - which eventually ran out - so I'll pick up the reins again in the morning and hopefully get the job done properly this time...
Very small and more often than not, form an irregular shape once burnt off. They are bright though, I guess as you would expect, putting the same volume of fuel in a smaller bulb...The tie off fabric is ragged and excessive making for untidy ends. You also often get one larger perforation, not bad enough to flame but concerning. However, there is no getting away from that price. Good for testing whilst fettling as it doesn't matter if you break a couple.
Those were the ones I saw. Missed the boat. Gone now. But I thought they were too good to be true. Oh dear will keep looking.
Yep ... see Colins 5 th post on this theme ... So I ordered and got a pack of Chinee Butterfly mantles ... single hole Not V42 for Bialaddin / Vapalux as advertised on E bay ... for £2.96 .. is it worth a negative feedback to the seller from E bay . they are ok though old stock probably wanted to sell em ... take care al l
The Chinese Butterfly mantles that most are getting online are usually from current production. They might not be perfect in every aspect. But they are certainly some of the most practical these days. Bright, plentiful and most importantly, come with a price that nobody would ever even think about complaining.
I sent the seller a neutral feedback ... I am not not overjoyed but I cannot make a silk purse out of a pigs ear so to speak ... but I will use them in the fullness of time and at a price of £2.96 for a dozen of em who cares.. just do not want others to be sucked in to think they are for the V42 , Bialaddin / Vapalux two hole vapouriser systems ... we all know about mantle surgery to make them work .... seller should advertise correctly , suppose that person in Malaysia not bothered anyway ... take care all
That's quite true. Some disappointments perhaps. Even if they're for free, receiving something that's not originally ordered is not particularly amusing. I've seen "V42" mantles being advertised as suitable for Bialaddins, Vapalux and so on. The package was not displayed at all, and its quite unlikely that the buyer would be getting anything close to these:
@Alby I had something similar a few years back when the mantles were advertised as suitable for both Tilley and Vapalux and were shown running on both lanterns. I contacted the seller explaining these were single tie and should be double tie. The reply I received was “Just cut bottom it fits”. Although not overly happy with this I tried it and had no problems at all. The mantles were very cheaply priced and good quality so I lived with it. I didn’t feel it was deliberate false advertising, but more a case of accepting the need to adapt what is available locally as the normal and not realising we may feel differently in a different country/culture etc. Regards Jeremy
No offence meant, but when you mix cultures you can get surprises! That's to a great degree what makes life worth living!
