Finally the seal kit arrived, as did the mantles today, so clutching meths, paraffin and lighter I entered the workshop in trepidation. Ensuring the close proximity of a fire extinguisher, the font was filled along with the pre-heat burner and, keeping one eye on the open door and an easy escape route, lighter was applied to pre-heater, clipped into position and a seemingly endless two minutes passed. The recommended six strokes made and yeaaa! there was light! .... followed by a put put put and ... nothing! Oh b****r! OK, check everything, yes a tiny jet from the vaporiser, no obvious fuel leaks so try aga..... Confound it, I forgot to tighten the pump to the fount. I'm getting too old for all this. Start over, the same interminable two minutes, all OK, apply pressure and yes yes yes. We have light, a steady flame and this time it settled into a musical steady hiss. Sooooo satisfying. It has now been burning for half an hour and no issues. I like this beast. As promised, a (historic to me) photograph of the great event.
Well done, you now see the satisfaction of resurrecting a long dormant lamp often relegated to the scrap bin. You now have the bug, there’s no redemption all you can do now is to continue with your good works and enjoy. Welcome to the afflicted.
Nice results. Question, I have my inspection lamp and see the mantle is pushed in at the bottom like yours shows. How do you determine placement of the fresh mantle before you burn it in? Is the area obvious where to tie by the vaporizer position? Mostly asking about the lower position. Duane
