1958 Petromax N°829/500 HK.

Hi all,

Here is a good example of 1958 Petromax N°829/500 HK.
ALtena factory produced at the time to millions of copies.

I discovered this lamp in august 2016 during an early morning walk with a beautiful sun.

It date from marsh 1958 wirtten on the carboard wich was completely destroyed.
There were also spare parts, mantle, tools.
The contruction is strong and heavy.

I did not really use my five N°829, they are too powerful.

What impresses me most about the German made Petromax is the precision of the manufacturing. Very close tolerances and everything fits together so well compared to the far east made copies.

@Titoo . What color is the reflector? It looks like it is a black top and white bottom.

 

This is one of my favorites. They are well built and I have always found the German Petromax lanterns to be very dependable and god-awful bright!

La couleur c'est l'émail blanc et noir.



Les lampes Petromax avant et après WW2 ont été fabriquées avec une grande précision.

Marque Petromax, à la fermeture de l'usine Casa Hipolito en 1999/2000 au Portugal, sont transportés en Asie, la qualité est parti avec.

Lovely collection. The 829's dating from this period are particularly good.

 

I'll agree with all comments here. Its in excellent, near-pristine shape.
From my personal observation and opinion on their constructional details, off all post-WWII Petromax lanterns, those from the 1950s (Altèna) were 'somewhat' better-made. Close-tolerances, refined finishings amongst other virtues.

Sometimes I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that the factory was still fully Graetz-managed/owned(at least before 1961) or simply because of economics.
