Hi All Tracer/Erwin sent me some old Veritas mantles so i thought i'd do a comparison test with a newer tilley mantle to see the difference in light output . I have taken the photo's from outside my workshop as the light is more even & you get a better view of the mantles in comparison. Here area few pics , the lamp on the left is the Veritas mantle the light seems a third brighter . Oh & just time for tea Best regards Stu
Hmmm? There maye be significant difference but you can't compare mantles like this. Different burners and vaporisers means you are comparing three differerent parts and it may not be the mantles making the difference. You need to try the the two mantles on the same burner but then you can't do a side by side comparison. In fact this is the main reason I went to the trouble and expense of building a light meter. ::Neil::
Hi stu avery nice test on the two mantles i agree the veritas mantle is brighter may be the older mantles had more thorium or other chemical which they dont like useing nowdays and i do believe the older mantles the weave was tighter giving a brighter light,but using a veritas mantle on a tilley i would expect the tilley mantle to perform better on the tilley
Hi Guys This was hardly a NASA spec test more of an enthusiastic amateur obsevation , but as suggested the equipment may differ slightly , what i omitted to say was i had tried the burner & mantle on both lamps to give a more honest approach & the Veritas mantle was still brighter each time must be the Thorium content I must not post hurridly before i go to work Best regards Stu
