Somehow I have misplaced the needle inside the vaporiser. Is it essential or can you get away with pricking the hole carefully with some very fine jewellery wire or does it have another function? Secondly, I have put new seals, springs and pump leather ( left in oil overnight) in and get virtually no pressure. To me the spring in the one way valve is very strong - and the pump leather not a great fit?? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Success! I changed the NRV spring to a weaker one than supplied by Tilley and have found that the needle inside the vaporiser is not essential- photo to follow soon of lamp alight! I guess I will have to prick the hole in the top of the v tube regularly.
The Tilley pricker acts as both a pricker, and a secondary shut off to stop the lamp leaking through the jet in the vapouriser. While you can get away with running a Tilley without the pricker, you lose the ability to quickly prick the jet while it’s running. And, it’s a really small hole so you would need a 0.14mm pricker or thereabouts. Prickers are available from The Base Camp (UK). Cheers Tony
I, personally, would not try to run the lantern without that pricker rod. I would check the NRV, too. The whole pump assembly should come right out. Then I would check the action of the pump. Pump it several times, you should hear a "popping" noise. If you don't then the problem could be the NRV. Make sure your pump leather is pliable and not stiff. Even though you soaked it in oil for a while it still may need more oil, try working it in a little more with your fingers. Good luck!
Hello Brian and welcome to CPL. The vaporiser needs the pricker needle, you can buy them from the Bay, or a fellow lamper my send you one, The spring on the pricker rod is what puts tention on your on /off valve, when you pump air into it it will be escaping. Have you put new seals in the pump A service pack for x246. Pump font seal The NRV at the bottom of the pump, Pump leather cup, soaking it is good, something you need to flare it out abit to make a better compression, The shut off valve, unscrew from tank, on the bottom offthe valve is a fine mesh unscrew, inside is asnother seal, small round disk like in the NRV, repace it, check mesh is clean / cleared, Small Orings are for the on/off spindle, the knob dose screw off, the glan nut dose screw off, put two rings on, check inside glan nut, remove any old seal, put it back together, Should be good, i hope this helps
Hi Brian ..all good advice from Darryl aforementioned .. The pricker wire ( Tilley part 607 ) is absolutely essential, to operate and control your Tilley lamp. I recall you have a X246 b stormlight , so the vapouriser is Part 606 as well ... I looked at the Main Tilley lamp site ... unfortunately they cannot accept card banking, but there is a TP landline number maybe you could send a Postal order or a personal bank cheque .. give them a call ... who knows ? Of course there is E bay but who knows what condition or lies are shewn/indicated.. I have had good success with vapourisers........ but some are crap. You need a NOS ..{.new old stock }one ... The older ones with the brass bottomed ferrule crimp type are the best .. avoid steel crimped if you can .. ... Then there is Base camp or Hurricane lamps outfits to consider .. good luck M8tey
Thanks all! I did replace every seal, spring etc. and the slightly weaker spring in the NRV seems to have done the trick by allowing air at lesser pressure through into the tank. I’ll invest in a new pricker needle unless I find the old one ( probably rolled off the workbench) and use the jewellery wire until then.
