Started to fettle my Hasag 351L. Of course missing glass, jet and needle but these are available at www.starklichttechnik.de so no problem there. I do have a question about the burner though. The others in the reference gallery seem to all have a clay burner. Mine has something different. Am i just missing a metal flame screen?
Yes you are missing the metal screen. Normally but what is normal the HASAG lamps use a metal burner with metal screen.
Marc I just did this for another lantern missing its burner flame screen: This is one of the flame screens @ROBBO55 made to fit the Austramax burner, so it’s just a copy of the Coleman. Martin cut them from a hi-fi speaker cover. Cheers Tony
Thanks @Tony Press that was my next question. Seems the material is not so important. Will see what I can get my hands on
@Marc G'day Marc, here is the post on how I made the screen. Austramax 3/300 Burner Repair If I can help let me know. If you get stuck send me your details in a pm and I can post one to you.
@Marc I shouldn't type on a small screen early in the morning. Marc, the offer still stands if the need ever arises. @MarkC
Thanks for the offer. I will make an attempt myself, following your old post first. Got plenty of time while I wait for the jet and needle.
Still busy with my electrolysis cleaning. Moving on to the flame spreader soon. Yours is working very well
Electrolysis done and the it turned out ok. Next to polish up and then lay down a little nickel plate. Globe is just for the pic. Closest to hand and not correct size.
I'd like to see your results no matter how good or bad. I like the way you are going about restoring this lamp and I am very interested to see your nickel plating. As I said, if it didn't turn out well, I don't care. I'm interested in the subject and would like to see and even discuss all results, good or bad that may be of benefit to us all. Just a heads up @AussiePete
I did get around to finish it but then got caught up in diy and didn't post any more pics. It popped into life, but then wouldn't go when i had a mantle on. Suspect a bit of water still in the tank before i filled it. Tried it again a couple of weeks ago and it was leaking fuel. Remains on to do list. Plating turned out ok. I am a bit too much of a perfectionist to say it was any better
I'm lucky here in Australia where we get quite warm days. After I have finished rinsing a tank of vinegar, I always leave my tank in the sun and make sure I lay it so the bung hole is at the highest point. For those people that live in cooler climates or don't get a lot of sun, after you have emptied the tank to the best of your ability then add some methylated spirits to the tank and give it a swirl around and tip it out, just like I do on a drab day. You don't need a lot but the metho captures water and that helps to make sure the tank is nice and dry. I don't know what methylated spirits is called outside of Australia. If you feel like it, I'd be really interested to get your thoughts as to why you aren't happy with the plating. There is nothing wrong with being a perfectionist. I know photos don't always tell the true story. It annoys me something shocking when photos make a lamp or part of a lamp look worse than it actually is. It doesn't bother me so much when photos make things seem better than they are. This is an enjoyable fettle to follow.
