This is branching off @Kiwiboy00 post here. I thought I had 4 but can only find 3 so that must have been a dream. The two on the ends are identical and are 106 mm tall and 172 mm wide. The middle one is 101 mm (right opn 4 inch) tall and also 172 mm wide.
Nice Anthony I will also pull mine out and take some photos in the coming days. Be good to find out what the difference is in shades, Tilley vs Kayen. Regards Darren
These two shades are the same size and shape(s). The main measurements are: height 108mm top opening 107mm bottom opening 167mm. These two shades are the same size and shape(s). 129mm x 109mm x 167mm. Comparison. Cheers Tony @Anthony @Kiwiboy00
Thanks, @kero-scene. I've added below some additional photos of one of the the "opal" shades I posted above. It's the one on the left of this photograph: This particular shade has a different finish from the opal shade adjacent to it. It appears to be older than its partner, and also older than the other opal shades shown in this thread so far. The bottom edge is smooth. The top edge had been ground or cut. Manufacture or later damage mark. Cheers Tony @Anthony
@kero-scene Yours looks like it is a very different shape. The sizes are close enough to what I would call the same as the two one the ends of my first picture though. All the others in that style have only the one ridge around the bottom rather than two. The first of what may be several questions is what model Tilley did it come off ? Thanks for showing it. Very interesting.
@Anthony It’s from a TL106 - second variant (using the categorisation as in Jim Dick’s book). I bought a pork pie x246 at the same time, so overall the collection had the look of 1940s/1950s. It came from the Blue Mountains.
Something prompted me to revisit this thread. Having gone through a pile of catalogues, I have reached a (tentative) conclusion that the Tilley shade with the top collar came out with the “pork pie” Table Lamps in 1946. Prior to the 1946 catalogue illustrating the shade on the left, above, Tilley illustrations show the shade on the right. Edit: It’s always a good idea to go back to the Tilley bible to check your assumptions. On page 24 of Jim Dick’s book he says: “The TL 106 replaced the TL10 in 1946. Features were... and a high-lipped ‘champagne’ coloured glass shade.” The TL136 is also featured with that shade on p26. Cheers Tony
I have a catalogue that has the TL10, WL25 and the ML93 all wearing the new shades. The TL13 is shown with the older in the front of the catalogue and the newer further in. This catalogue shows the EX100 which was replaced by the Pork Pie X246 in 1946. This would mean the new shape shade must have been pre 1946. This same catalogue shows the TL10 with the new shade. IE pre 1946 From the same catalogue.
