Henry, Graham and Anthony Of course I've seen this type of burner before, but only briefly. I was with Bernie Holmes delivering a Nagel Chase No. 5 to its owner. It was there I took the photographs here: Nagel Chase No:5 I have now rummaged through the Gloria pile and found this to put the lonely burner on: It now looks like an almost complete Nagel Chase No. 5 from around 1922. @Tony Press That's a good result. Is it just the mica that's missing or is there something else ? Henry.
Henry The mica is missing, but I can get one made by Fred, I assume. As far as I can work out, the only other bits missing are one of the cage struts, the bail, and the top nut that secured the white hood cap. It also means I now have the part that is missing (the pricker) from the other lamp that I posted (now in the Gallery), so I might be able to make that part for the owner. On closer inspection, I am missing only the mica and one cage strut and 8 cage bolts for the struts. The pricker is in excellent condition The generator has a very small jet. If the generator works, this lamp should work. Cheers Tony
Tony, You say you're missing the bolts for the cage struts. I have the kero equivalent of your lantern and can provide some details. Because it's an American lantern, I've used imperial and given the metric equivalent. ALL the screws are the same length = bloody short. Length of thread 0.1875 = 3/16" (4.5mm). [The holes in the struts I measured are 5/16" deep] Major diam. 0.1365" (3.47mm) I don't have a gauge for American threads but using a jewelers loup and my Whitworth gauge, 32 t.p.i (5/32") seemed a perfect match. Thank you, Henry. That information is very useful. It seems, then, I will be able to make and buy the bits I need. There’s a great nuts and bolts shop about 30 minutes from me. They stock unusual threads and sizes, so when I can get over there I’ll take an existing strut, and your measurements, and we should be able to match it up. Cheers Tony @Henry Plews
A lot of American products use "Guage" sized small screws in eg 2-56, 4-40, 6-32, (Thread Pitch Chart (UNC / UNF / UNEF / UN))
@Graham P and @Henry Plews I checked the thread of the uprights with a UNC/UNF tap set, and I have come to the conclusion that it is UNC 6-32. Now to find the bolts to fit. Cheers Tony
@Henry Plews Well, Graham (@Graham P) rang me to say that the UNC 6-32 thread is the standard thread used in Australia for affixing electrical power point covers. I’ve already found one in my electrical box and it is exactly correct. My next door neighbour is an electrician, so I’m heading there in the morning. Cheers Tony
