A few of we Aussies have been pondering the Kayen 449 hoods on Kayen AP2 lanterns. I am asking you whether you could check your Kayens and post here a photo of your hood and/or whether it has the following characteristics: Colour Same colour inside and out Speckled or plain colour Cut-off corner of the top cowl, or curved corners Nettlefold or Kopsen. [If you don't know, post a photo of the tank sitting on a table showing the bottom rim from the side. Thank you in advance. Hi Tony, let me know if I have misunderstood, but here is a photo, klopsen, matt brown, same colour inside and out.
The other piece of information that would be useful is the width of the lip at the bottom of the hood where the globe sits: (Hoods, curtesy of Mike Burton) Cheers Tony
Well I don't have much to choose from and this is the best I could do with the photos I have access to. The first is a steel fount Kopsen AP2 with the fairly standard green hood. It has angled corners and the same colour throughout. The next is also on a Kopsen AP2 but has a slightly mottled light green hood. Rounded corners and the same colour throughout. Of course there is no guarantee that the hoods are the ones they came with originally.
Width of lip using a micrometer and measured on the external surface: 12.7 mm, if you include the ‘rise’ then 13.6mm
@Tony Press I have listed these according to the fount they were found on. Kopson Mottled light green Same colour inside and out Speckled Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 10 mm (wire clip not original) Kopson Mottled light green Same colour inside and out Speckled Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 10 mm Kopson Mottled grey Same colour inside and out Speckled Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 8 mm Kopson Mottled green Same colour inside and out Speckled but a different pattern Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 9 mm Kopson Green Same colour inside and out Plain Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 11 mm Nettlefold Mottled light green Same colour inside and out Speckled Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 10 m Unknown Kayen Mottled dark green Same colour inside and out Speckled Curved corners on the top cowl Width of the lip at the bottom of the hood - 10 m
My example came on a brass fount Kopsen AP2 and is the same as the second example posted by @Nils i.e. slightly mottled light green inside & out and rounded corners. The width of the lip seems to vary, only very slightly though (uneven thickness of enamel ?) and averages 10mm with the 'rise adding another 1.5mm. Henry.
Here is my example of a Kopsen AP2. The entire hood outside is light green enamel with white enamel flecks as is the inside of the vent hood only. The inside of the lower part of the hood is a dark grey enamel with some white enamel flecking. The internal enamel appears in very good condition and not a burn dark grey. Here is the fount’s Kopsen Label. Cheers Pete
All of these are the same colour on the inside. Any speckling on the inside is overspray. All have about the same size globe collar. All the speckled green have rounded corners and everything else has 45` cut corners. This one is a bit different, It has not been in an accident because the enamel is ok on the bend. I do not know or are able to support any personal theories I have on what is Kopsen, Kayen, reproduction or other. The blue speckled hood could be Kopsen or it could be that they both did blue before green or green before blue. I believe the green non speckled were from the green painted steel founts. The dark green speckled like Martins and Mike Burtons I have never seen.
My hoods will be here soon I am in at the moment re-arranging my lamp storage and things are in a bit of disarray.
Here are some of the Kopsen - Kayens in my possession the hoods I believe are what they came with but not guaranteed .All handles are brass One point I was surprised to note was the lower insect screens were 3 of the 4 have 2 rows of holes and a disc to reinforce riveting of collar while 4th has 3 rows of holes (no sign of collar)
Thanks, Graham! Cheers Tony Edit: Graham, do you think that black tank is original paint? Also, I think I have one of those insect screens with no stem, somewhere in a box. I’ll dig it out.
The black painted lamp looks to have been sprayed by a previous owner as there seems to be dust under paint. The insect screen is identical to one used on 246B (except that 246B has less holes in outside circle) and wire clip is missing
As Quoted by Macburner (https://classicpressurelamps.com/attachments/til_instr_tl106-136_1946-pdf.77580/) see part # 773 (this answers one question re insect screens)
Thanks again, Graham. There’s two things to note about that illustration: 1. It has the “dish without stem” lower insect screen, and 2. The insect screen is illustrated as inside the 182 globe. Neil Do you have a date for that publication? Cheers Tony @Graham P @Mackburner @ROBBO55 @Anthony
No it does have printers marks on the last page "Type 2325" bottom left and "A.C.60M. 27" bottom right. Not much help for dating. I assumed it was about 1946 but really that's a guess. ::Neil::
@Tony Press This is mine,AP2 black blue speckel outside, blue/grey inside. Cut corners on vent.globe rim 10mm
