Once I got my R1 radiator running I had the bug so purchased a mid 50's X246. Quick clean up and a new set of seals and it was up & running. The chrome on the frame & handled had a fair bit of rust so I sprayed it aluminium grey as a temporary measure while I figure out what to do with it. I imagine not much can be done to improve the speculum coating? Have a pressure leak up the pump shaft so am guessing I need to look at the pump NRV. But am very pleased it is up & running. Will add some more pics tomorrow. View attachment 79605 View attachment 79605
Well done. I wouldn't do anything with the aluminium paint. If it's neat and clean aluminium paint or chrome colored paint, it works for many people. Some folk do have a knack for getting their founts a lot closer to pristine, but really if it's clean and working then it's a classic lantern to get into your collection. If you are overhauling them on a first instance it's generally good to replace the NRV rubber pip at the bottom of the pump and in the control cock one also as they get hard and may not seal properly. There are plenty of articles on this site giving more comprehensive information on this.
Oooh - that's one of those X246s with the single-flare hoods. I can't remember ever seeing one over here (or perhaps I just haven't looked closely enough!)...
I think you need to look at your lamps David, i've just looked round the corner here and seen 2...in fact it's the only 2 lamps in the room
Yep, first one I looked at (the Dutch X246 I've been fettling and playing with for the past two weeks!) has only one hood flare. Just never noticed it - I've clearly not been looking hard enough...
