Just acquired another lovely guardsman, with excelent brown top, I do like the Brown tops. especially in good condition. It also has the deeper Globe. Paint work needs attention I may just strip and repaint to original gold colour or as near as I can get it. And I am thinking about changing the cage for older style, I recon the older style cage looks better. May start on this next week, so money shot will have to wait, but it wont be long.
I'm not sure why you think the paintwork needs attention - that's just about as good a Guardsman as you're likely to get. They're only original once...
I agree with David, in that condition I would leave well alone, maybe a little car wax on the tank after a gentle clean.
@Pitsmoor Col Is it date stamped underneath? I’d even leave the cage on it. It’s a good example of its type, in very good condition. That cage, by the way, stops the hood from dislodging. Depending on its age (hence my question about the date stamp) you might end up putting a good early cage on an inferior Tilley tank. Cheers Tony
I would put my hands at work and paint it lol but that’s just me messing with all others On a side note I’ll just leave it like that
Dated. 5/59 with XA suffix. Yes, never thought about the hood dislodging bit. Thanks for all replies. Colin..
As it's already been said, I'd strip it down, give it a good clean and polish, then reassemble and enjoy. You'll have to keep hunting for an earlier one Nice lamp, enjoy it
@Pitsmoor Col Thanks. Don’t waste the earlier cage on that tank. I think you have a very fine Tilley lantern, that doesn’t need anything than a good clean, and a bit of TLC. Just don’t overpressurise the tank. Cheers Tony
Just cleaned the paintwork up a bit, new seals fresh fuel and away we go. Money shot..Nice and bright.
@Pitsmoor Col I put in a handful of small nuts and give it a good shake rattle and roll, usually brings out a load of rubbish.
Same solution as @BigStevie have a handful of nut and short bolts to shake around. Count them in and count them out.
