Hello, Has anyone ever seen or heard of a 242B made in England? The burner is stamped 242B and it is dated 1957. Not sure how hard these are to find. Terry Marsh’s site does not seem to document English and Australian Coleman products. Thanks.
Short answer: Yes. Made in England 242B is listed in the Pressure Lamp Catalogue produced by @Mackburner. Tony
I don't believe they are rare but not so common. From my understanding, these lamps are thought to be made in Canada but stamped Made In England and assembled in England. I think those that matter, don't believe Coleman manufactured lamps in England.
I seem to recall they had several factories in the UK - there was certainly one in Chiswick, West London. Whether they manufactured lamps and lanterns or just assembled them from parts made in Canada, I've no idea but whatever they were doing was sufficient for the products to be legally described as 'Made in England'...
You'll find several listed in the first two Coleman Canada lantern sections. A 242B is missing so you should contact Terry and see if he'll pop a picture of yours on the site. Mike.
My personal belief is that Coleman manufactured in England until about 1959. When they actually began to manufacture lamps I can't recall if I ever felt confident enough to say, it has been years since I looked at this subject. It may have been a similar time frame as to Australia, 1950 to 1960, possibly '61, in Australia. I am confident that Coleman, in England and Scotland, manufactured generators and other spare parts at least, from well before the war. Recent information I have discovered casts a little doubt on whether Coleman, Toronto, manufactured the their early export, Made In Canada founts. It may well have been that Coleman factories in the US produced the early Canadian stamped founts and Toronto simply assembled the lamps. That is another story for another time of course.
I don't know what the powers that be say in regards to Made In Mexico Colemans. You would have to do some digging around or perhaps those that know will see your post.
I have this in the PLC which is info from the research of Terry Marsh. :- Industrias Kolmex S.A., also I.K.S.A. was a Coleman approved factory in Mexico City producing the 236 and the 242 models. This company no longer exists but it had a branch called Flamic who used to make the mantles, the company evolved and today is called Flamineta, they now produce mainly LP gas appliances as stoves and lamps for vendor carts and they still produce mantles and globes that fit the 200, 242, 236 and 237 lanterns There is another company in Mexico called LIN-MEX, who also produced a 236 style lantern. I don't know the years of production but the company still exists making LP gas lanterns and stoves, their main business now is making blowtorches for plumbing. ::Neil::
I know three different lanterns of the Lin-Mex, chrome, green and black. They also build stoves Primus 96 type and some with the 242 Coleman style fount. There was also another company that used to make fuel stoves called “Llama Azul” Flamineta used the be Ingusa, and didn’t knew they were also Flamic and yes they still produce globes in those sizes, mantles and propane lanterns.
