Tilley Radiator R1/R1A

Hope someone can give me an snswer. Did the Tilley Radiator R1 range come with a reflector guard included, or was it an optional extra? I see so many of them without the guard that I think that they were sold without it. I am having great fun restoring these old items! Best regards - Steve.

 

Hello Steve, every Tilley advert for the R1 which I have seen, shows it with a guard and the guard was never listed as an optional extra.

 

The reason so many of them (and the Bialaddin Bowlfire for that matter) have the guard missing is because they were designed to come off easily so the vapouriser and mantle could be changed with minimum fuss. So people took them off and didn't put them back on

There must be a mountain of these things somewhere in the world!

Now, the Tilley RH57 radiator had a guard that didn't come off - it just hinged forward allowing access - and how many of them do you see with the guard missing, eh? - Q.E.D.

Mind you, come to think of it, how many RH57s in any condition do you ever see these days...

They do come up on eBay from time-to-time, Steve, so I'd just be patient if I were you.

I got one of the earlier ones for £16 a few weeks back. I wouldn't fancy making one for that price...

 

Hi David, I will keep looking, but if I can get the accurate dimensions and the basic design, I would really like to try a one-off fabrication. Could be made from mild steel rod, or copper/brass rod, no need to go to chrome plating. Just an idea!

I think I posted the wrong stuff, But someone will find it useful. A while ago I made Radiator guards and Pl 53 Guards. Apart from a sample to copy you will need good quality wire. The builders grade is too soft. I got mine from a spring manufacturer. Originally they would have been spot welded but I silver soldered mine.

Anybody know what gage the wire for the cage should be? If know one has a spare and I want/have to make my own?

 

Thanks Stu, but I have sold that R1 on as it was not to my standard for keeping. When I do get a keeper, if it needs a guard, I will give you a shout. Thanks - Steve.
