    Hi folks, I am hoping someone can measure the length of the brass upright hood supports for me, I have a short handle lamp and I am thinking it might have been altered in the past at some point as the hood rests on the bail supports and sits at an angle. I noticed that the supports are peened over to keep the top support ring in place, but have noticed in some of the photos on here that the support points are almost flush with the top ring, which would worry me if moving the lamp when full and alight...
    Any help appreciated.

    Have a look at others in this gallery.
    I have just checked five 1st and 2nd version and hood is marginally above frame as burner is held a wisker above by vaporiser.
    (it may be that internals of your burner are eroded)
    Maybe an extra (or new thicker) washer under control cock will help

    You haven't tried to upload the actual pictures.
    You have tried to insert links (which doesn't work anyway) to a third party image hosting site.
    Please try again, but use the uploading facility on our site. It's just to click on the button sying "Upload a file" in the lower right corner of the text field.

    Have you tried it fully assembled, ie with cock, vaporiser and burner?
    This will hold the hood centrally and stop it tilting.
    Also, you can gain / lose a slight amount of height on the vaporiser via adjusting the outer ring that the control cock screws into.
    I have attached pics of mine if that helps

    Those hoods sometimes bind on the top globe ring. Normally just needs a push to locate it evenly.

    You can't alter the height of the vaporiser. The cock seal is to the cock not the outer ring. That only allows you to alter the clocking of the control. ::Neil::

    Without the vapouriser in place my two does the same thing. Install the vapouriser and see how it looks then.

    Thanks for the info gents, appreciate the pictures as well, Going to give mine a full fettle but still not sure about peening the end of the supports, must be a better way to secure the top ring.

    Fettle complete, some may hate this but i have removed the old supports for safe keeping and made new ones, tapped 3mm at the top end to secure to the top ring, actually very sturdy now being secured at the 4 points with 3 mm brass screws. She is going to be a shelf queen though as i love the look of these lamps.
    If anyone is interested the diameters of the supports are 1/4 down to 3/16 the thread on the lower supports is 2BA, the lamp hood now sits nice and square and i am happy that the top ring won't come away when it's moved around.

    Cheers Tony, the original supports (2 off) were flush with the top ring and I thought the lamp could have come apart if lifted by the handle for any length of time, that is why i asked if someone could measure the length of the supports for me, as I thought if they are only peened over at the top ring it must've been by a couple of mm at most.

    @Jacky Young

    This is what my very early X246 (1946) pork pie looks like. Note that the old style “deep” glass sits above the flat plate and peened rods.

    Thanks for that Tony, ill check mine tomorrow, when i made the new supports i added 2mm onto the length then drilled and tapped them so i dont think it will be far away from original length, there is probably enough material left to re-peen the originals back into position.
    Thanks again.

    @Jacky Young

    Nice work on the supports and the lantern looks good. :thumbup:
    The screws are stronger than the original peened supports.

    Something to consider,
    The hood wasn't designed to sit on the top of the cage. The vapouriser sits on a flange inside the burner and that supports the hood. As a shelf queen it's not an issue. As a user changing the position of the jet in the burner could have an effect on the operation of the lantern.
