    Hi

I have purchased a second hand Tilley lamp.

I have replaced the seals and got a new vaporiser tube (new). It holds its pressure well and gives a great pop and a great light after fifty pumps. Then after few mins I’d starts popping pulsing and goes out and sounds like a jet engine.

Gould this be a burner issue?

Have you cleaned out the burner head? Compressed air is the best, also check out the hood as well for blockages.

Just by giving it “a blow” probably should take it apart

It could be blocked in the hood or burner head, just a guess.
I always take apart the hood but, not the burner tubes, as you may not get them back in, but if the spigot will unscrew take that off, or the top of the burner then blow out. Also clean the hood between the grooves as well.

It sounds like it is loosing pressure, is that definitely not the case, either that or the vaporiser jet is getting blocked, you can try quickly turning the tap off / on to allow the needle to clear the jet.

Cleaned Best I can. I can’t get the burner out of this one for some reason and fired without the mantel pressure seems fine. Have also tried prolonged heating (double). Been ruining for 10 mins so far with no problems. I’ll see how it goes then replace the mantle

That seems like a very low pressure, have you cleaned and flushed the tanks? Or put some wire down the centre hole, but take off the control cock valve, then you will see a small hole that might be blocked, and are using kerosene?

Good thought in the central hole. I’ll check put there seems to be a jet of fuel coming out The vapouriser whwn pressurised.

it has stayed lit though so that’s a bonus I’ll see what happens when I replace the mantel

You should be getting this type of pressure.

Maybe that's the problem, the new vaporizers seem to give a lot of trouble?
Do you have another one to swap and see if its works better or the same?

The roaring is back-burn where the flame has gone back inside the dome (can be caused by momentary interruption of fuel) (can happen with pricking and be cured same)
I would empty fuel into a bottle and you will be able to see any impurities or crud pour through a filter paper and can be re used.

@Michael Harrison ..Hi Michael and Welcome to CPL!

You shouldn't have to preheat twice?

After cleaning and making sure the seals are all ok, just try 1 preheat and no more than 20 pumps to start... let it warm up for a min, then another 30, then another 20 etc

There have been problems with the new vapourisers from Tilley International, although I seem to have been more fortunate with the few i bought, although that was over 3 yrs ago now..

Hope you are able to sort things out ...perhaps there is someone on here that is'nt too far away that could help perhaps?

All the above advice should help you get going

With a full tank (1.5 pints) and a pump in good working order, no more than 100 pump strokes. It's not difficult to blow the base-plate on this model.

There's penty of good advice above and Skipton's not too far away if you get stuck..

You should take a road trip to Skipton's, I know I would if I was close.
Michael and I have taken a road trip to a collectors, house it was amazing and we stay in touch as well.
It's great to share information and see other people's collection, also its a way of learning, so we can pass on to the next generation what we learn.
The best part is you get to meet a new friend. Go for it.

    Update

changed the vaporiser back to the one it came with.....running better. Light is pulsating a bit but I have only put half a pint in to test. Presume I should fill?

G'day @Michael Harrison and welcome to CPL.
Now that you have it running, swap the vapourisers and see if you get the same result. You will at least know if the new vapouriser is a dud or not.
Yes, fill the fount but half full shouldn't cause the pulsing unless the pressure is low also.

Just for clarification and to be explicit, the term fill the tank should not be interpreted as a full tank. That is why Henry has clearly stated an amount which is widely recommended and is what is meant by a ‘full’ tank. I believe Martin is also advising what is a correct fill, as per the written instructions from Tilley which state ‘half fill’. When Lampies say ‘fill the tank’ They mean to the correct level, NOT a full tank. Overfilling is a bad thing.

Iain, you are correct and it was a poor choice of words on my part.

    @Michael Harrison
When counting pumps to obtain the correct pressure it's important to start with the correct level of fuel in the tank.

@Michael Harrison , hello and welcome.
Apart from your vaporisor issue, lost pressure, did you give it the dunk test.
Empty contence, pump up with air, submerge in water, look for bubbles, aroud cock valve, pump at the tank seal, remove the pump to see if air is excaping from NRV, if so replace the seals.
Also chech the pressure indicator, as the little pressure bellow may have a leak.
    I hope this helps

thanks. What is the correct amount? From memory (27 years in scouts) that is a pint and a half.
