Hello all, When i sit in the back yard on a nice evening enjoying a good glass of whiskey and a fine cigar and starring to my pressure lamp. Thought about fettling my lamp and enjoy the hard labour and listening to that wonderful noice, the sound of the pressure lamps. Until my lovely wife is coming to sit next to me. Then she start to complain about the smell and the noise off the lamps. She can not hear the children...... Does it sound familiar to any off you. Which pressure lamp makes the lowest noise? regards, Hans-Peter
I had the same problem, until I bought a bowl fire. The heater is much more appealing to my wife, and she will happily sit in front of that
@Hans-Peter , so you enjoy your lantern, bright and shiny. Then the wife comes and sits next to you. Now your nice and shiny lantern suddenly makes noise. Makes you wonder if the lantern is woman sensitive. Noise is very personal. I love the sound of a C-130 passing over at 300m height. When they also make a sharp turn "in front of the house", the sight is also good. My idea. Some of the petromax types have the adjustment screw in the J-tube. I think that is a source for the noise. Comapre it with a HASAG type without this screw and (extra) noise is gone.
I don't know if anyone here has experienced the sound of an RAF Typhoon silently skimming just above the waves and then rocketing, seemingly vertically, through the clouds and onwards up into the heavens, afterburners blazing away. That fair brought tears to my eyes and had me jumping up-and-down - what a thrill! Lanterns is nice but Typhoons is better! The nearest I got to being a Typhoon pilot that day - bah!
I had the same complaint early summer "too much noise". This may be of use to you: Noise and light output - Garden lighting
@Alex Smith , oh yes Chinooks too but they tend to pass by slowly and noisy. I use ADS-B Exchange - tracking thousands of aircraft to see what is happening. Use the U-option to see only military planes.
@Hans-Peter Vapalux/Bialaddin are very quiet. I know what you mean, wife will say: "What's that smell? (I get that question even when I don't have a lantern lit), "Boy, that thing is loud!" Or, "It's hurting my eyes, can you turn it down a little?" I usually call it a night at that point....
At @Alex Smith , I live next to one of the historical fields of the Arhem battle. Every year there is a remembrance, except this year. But the fields are still used by the military, chinooks are common, C-130 in the mean time also. So if you hear them, or see one, wait for the others to come.
Thanks for the suggestions, But how about veritas compared to vapulux en bialaddin. Oke all of them are more silent than airplanes etc.
I use to live near a large airport. Damn near went nuts with all that noise! One night we were sound asleep and one of the airplanes must have under shot the runway! I thought we lost our roof! We moved where we are now over 33 years ago, no airplanes! Just the moo from an occasional cow or a rooster crowing... heaven...
There is an old WW2 airfield at Earls Colne in Essex and a pub next to it was directly in line with the main runway. After one too many limped home they took the roof off! ...Made it into a flat roof for the duration. It has since been restored, but you can see the join!
I have a Hipolito 502 auto,. Very quiet..... Is there something wrong with it ? Seems to be working perfect at the min
It is not the problem that my lamp is not functioning correct. I started the topic because my wife does not like the noise of the lamp. But all different lamps makes different sound, so I thought which was has the least sound pressure.
@Hans-Peter This is just my opinion, from the standpoint of noise, stay away from the Petromax types. Although, I do have a couple of small Petromax types that are tolerable from the noise standpoint the large ones are very bright and noisy. The brighter the lantern the more noise it puts out! For quietness, a Tilley, Vapalux/Bialaddin, and the Coleman 200 and 242 series. There are others I'm sure but I'm not familiar with them. This is only my opinion. Others here probably have other thoughts on this Too. I think a good rule of thumb: "The brighter the lantern the more noise" Hope this helps
Two of my noisiest lamps are my Coleman 639 and a kero converted 635. They're both excellent lanterns, extremely bright and bloomin loud! I love them both though!
