Hi - maybe one for the petromax people. I am fettling a 1961 500Cp and the pre-heater is throwing unburnt (and burning) paraffin/kerosense all over the place. Pressure good. Am I correct in assuming this is a worn jet/nipple on the pre-heater ? I have tried cleaning it and it makes no difference. The lamp has no spirit cup and has seen plenty of use so the pre-heater will have too I assume. thanks Chris
Sounds like it's either worn out or something has clogged the nipple. Did you get a nozzle cleaner with the lantern? There are two very small holes on either side of the small hole where the kero comes out of. If one of these small air holes are clogged it will cause this issue.
Remove part no 220 and 221. With Part Number 224 still in place, locate the two mixer holes. Ensure that these are clean and free of debris using part number 180 the as they can easily clog. Reassemble and away you go. If problem persists, remove part number 224 and clean thoroughly. For part numbers, just google Petromax Part Diagram
Getting a fine fuel mist out of the rapid can be a challenge. but there are two versions of the main body part, with two holes and four. Since it is a replaceable part you should check how many holes thee are and clean them all. Then the top part with the actual nozzle must be clean too but also undamaged. If an owner ragged something in it to unblock, the changes are high this part is ruined. Also the pressure must be ok, to high or to low, both don't work. 2bar should be ok, but is the manometer correct ? Here is the full patent DE700213A
@george @eiremax @WimVe - Thank you. You were all correct. The air holes were blocked, there was some corrosion under the nipple. The underneath was full of fine gunk. Much careful cleaning and citric acid did the trick. I did have the pricker to clean with as well. The pressure gauge is a little "over reporting"- it only takes 30 strokes of the pump to get to 2 bar. I know this is wrong as my hipolito takes 40-50. So with clean unblocked nipple/airholes and a bit more pressure it worked well.
As for the pressure, you can chek the value with a "lighter gas refill can" trick. These have 2Bar gas pressure. As for pump strokes, a full tank with less air space can be on pressure quick. It looses pressure wuick too, while alight.
