Tilley question.

I have seen a few catalogue pictures showing this knob on this control cock.
Are they common in the UK ??

Hood looks a bit odd too but it may be just the trimming of the art work.

 

Control cock is a newer version, I believe.

 

From my own observations, I would say "reasonably common, I wouldn't consider them to be rare".

Others may think differently.

 

Thanks Henry, I was starting to think they were a UK only thing but I have just now found it in an Australian agents publication.

 

Proper brass GF., control cocks which have that dreadful knob fitted to them turn up fairly often and I have a plated example.

The hood which is shown in the above illustration is not the usual style of CH-1 hood and I have not seen one of that style.

I just keep finding them in catalogues.
A bit like purple cars, once you look you find them everywhere.

I thought these knobs were as common ad muck but have just checked all my lamps and this is what I found.
1. TL120A, Tilley’s last TL with that knob on control cock.
2. My remaining X410 and X410A both with that knob.
3. Heap of aluminium control cocks with that knob.
4. Box with 6 NOS knobs.
All except the TL120A came from Zimbabwe along with bits and pieces like bug screens which are more often found in Australia.

So far this one of Jeffs is the only sight I have had of this cock with this knob.

 

Snap! Was actually dismantling a steel radiator earlier and blow me it has that knob on it too.

My Tilley BR49 has a control cock like this and is dated 1960, if that's any help.

 

@henry, the one of those I do have came on one of those X246 tanks that is marked X246A.(Sept, '61)

Keep in mind, with the exception of the plastic knob the cock may look different because of the special heater device.

 

Thanks George, yours is that bit different to Jeffs or Jeans because is has the self locating bush for the 246 tank.
Another one I have not noticed before.
I have a self priming 246 CC with the same pattern but mine has the screw on knob.

The 1960 date would have to be right for that CC I expect.
What month in 1960?

Hello Anthony, in the images which are shown via the link below, there is an X-246-B with a gold coloured tank and I fitted it with a plated GF., control cock which has that hellish knob, it's easier to see if you enlarge the image and use the zoom tool.

The earliest example of the tapered cock knob I have is on a X359 from 11/59 (one in Gallery(X359 dated 8/59 ))

 

Left is 11/59 right is 246A (no date stamp)

 

Many X246's of fifties vintage have shown up in the Netherlands with that conical black knob which has a push fit, and as a later replacement so it seems. Timewise late 50's when Tilley started to economise? I believe the X246A was never seen without. Mike

On ebay I saw that type of lamp, but I don't know of the seller send it to the Netherlands.
Here in the Netherlands is this type of lamps extremely rare.

I'm looking for a lamp to restore.
Can anyone of you help me?

I have recently seen a few Tilley newsletters from Holland so it is a possibility you'll find one locally.
Having said that, they were big sellers in Australia but still don't come up that often.

 

There are several (at least two at the moment) for sale. And I have seen more last month so they are not extremly rare here.
At least not the FL6.

FL5 is one I am looking for too. These are all over the globe hard to find.
A lot of sellers have internet and visit here to get an value idea. Then they post an advert somewhere and even use pictures from this forum.
It is all in the game now.
Also there is a big boom in "brocante' and a FL6 is easy to electrify, so if complete, it is worth to build back to kerosene.

If you don't know if a seller ships to your place: ask him, I would say.

Both Wim and I have been mentioning a very good venue to succeed in purchasing an FL6.
Not sure why you came the way of CPL to orientate, but of course you are welcome here.
What is not clear either is which Ebay you are referring to, but I guess we all know the skittish seller.

To my knowledge there is not a similar forum on lamps active in the Netherlands (anymore), and the way the internet and several foreign sites like CPL have developed, I dare to suggest you will find the most relevant information here anyway.
Unless when you stuggle with English, but you seem to do fine in that department.

I would pursue this lamp on MP on which bids are invited. If the seller is a 'milker' or 'golddigger' you will find out soon enough.
Part of this hobby is to find and acquire a certain item. If you need such a lamp bad enough, the option is the other, highly prized lamp on sale. After all, it is only money that seller wants, not your loved ones.
