A rare beast indeed and so far the only one known. When I first saw it I realised it was clearly a kero burner with that supplementary generator heater. The lantern is dated April 1929 and I knew there were "unknown" kero lanterns 221 and 222 shipped as export in the period.

After much discussion with Dean, Terry Marsh and Darcy Vantiger we agreed this was most likely 221 but the evidence is circumstantial. Models 221 and 222 were both shipped from 1928 -1930 and noted as kerosene for export. Also a model K221 was shipped in 1932. During the same period, 1929 and 1930, there was a kerosene lantern advertised in several issues of the Straights Times in Malaysia as "Similar in appearance to the standard Coleman lantern but adapted for kerosene with a built in pump and an automatic tip cleaner." The adverts are illustrated but with a 1925 type L427 which cannot be right as that never had a tip cleaner. The shipping record and the Malaysian adverts had suggested to me a while back that this MIGHT mean the lanterns in Malaya were one of the two models shipped in 1929 but we really had no idea what they looked like.

Once we established that the valve was intended for a T88 type generator, the lamp satisfied the Malayan description and was dated in the correct period. We already know Coleman used that late 1920s 220 fount and globe cage for the early Instant-Lite lanterns. It is no real surprise to see it adapted for a kero burner as well. I guess that the two models were narrow and wide vent versions of the same lantern. Since there were a lot more 221s shipped than 222s, that suggests the narrow vent is 221 which would be consistent with more 220s shipped than 228s around the same time.
