This one dates from October 1961. After some pre-heater issues and new globe, valve rod,nut and washer, service kit, second hand gas chamber and a lot of cleaning we were off to the races..
@WimVe I do have the right glass - but it is in many pieces.... It was well packed for transit but I can see where the rapid starter has damaged it over the years. I am sure one will come my way one day...
Have you adjusted the valve on the mixing tube? Give it a rotation and you will soon find the optimum location as judged by the increase or decrease of the light intensity.
Correct but validate this in the reflection of a piece of white paper. So not by viewing direct into the light. And off coarse after the lantern is warmed up.
No - not yet. It was pretty close to vertical. I thought the light was a little "orange" at first but it was still daylight. I did note that there was some slight flaring round the mantle but only for the first 30 mins or so. I left it to run until it got dark and I still thought it not quite as "white" as my hipolito 502 with the same mantle. I have a newer J tube I was going to try on it next time round. Chris
Ok. No harm in checking the headspace between the top of the nozzle and the bottom of the mixer tube that is relative to the HK of the nozzle. That has a bearing on the flame intensity. These are a really great lantern that take a wee bit of attention.
A few tweaks. Extra lead seal on the vapouriser as with the new one it didn't seal properly with the control knob pointing where it needed to. Tightened up the connection on the J tube to gas chamber, nozzle and adjusted the jet to Jtube setting (now out because of the extra lead seal). It does seem to use/lose pressure faster than my hipolito so a little more investigation required but otherwise I am happy with it now. I did look at fiting a new J tube but the new ones seem shorter where they join the chamber. C
Lots of little things to make the whole! Sometimes a nightmare to chase down. Well persevered! You have reaped the rewards.
It turns out that using two lead washers on the vapouriser led to a slow leak. Removing one and being "brave" in tightening with only one worked well. The pressure gauge is telling the same story as my hipolito one so probably not too inaccurate. Now I am happy and this one is going to give good service I think.
Was your was washer a DIY effort? Hard to get sheet lead in the same thickness as the original washer. Also, it does take a good bit of force to crush the original washer to create the seal.
@eiremax It was a genuine Petromax service kit one. - and yes I did have to lean on it to compress it properly - much more than I was happy doing at the time - but it worked. cheers Chris
Lean on it ? Normally I screw the vaporizer unit into the fount. Fixed is fixed. Only thing is when to stop turning to get the valve into the right direction.
@WimVe - sorry colloquial english - "lean on it" in this instance means use greater force. The valve stopped about one centimetre past where it should be. I had to tighten it up nearly one full turn. I come from the school of stop and think before applying greater force (having wrecked several things in my youth) But now I know !
Nice! Got the same model here that I fettled last winter...time to fire it up and compare photos! What mantle are you using? Is the quick start serviceable?
The initial photos do indeed show a Petromax helox mantle. However it was a casualty of the cap being removed a few times while adjusting the air gap. The second picture shows one of Juliands ebay mantles which I believe is a thorium one. The pre-heater is now good, after some helpful advice on this board concerning unblocking the two small holes under the main jet. It also had a crack on the sheild, which was sometimes mis-directing the jet and interfereing with the burn. Some gardening wire round the base fixed this.
