I’ve decided it was about time I sorted my heaters, as they seem to be breeding suddenly. I have these three that are puzzling me most. Firstly they all work, very well. But the designs are puzzling me, I’ve looked in the gallery & am really no wiser. They all appear to have the same fount, but the cream one in the centre has the logos on the rim, the other two have no markings at all. The outer two have the same burner & a nice wooden handle, the cream one has a different burner & a flat steel handle. The wooden ones handle frame is brass. Can someone try and sort me out with the details I’m missing please
The one in the centre appears to be all original, but it has a later handle than the other two, it may have a date code on the base plate/bottom of the tank. They are all 1950's R-1 models, the burners which are on the other two are earlier burners.
The centre R1 is 54-8 other 2 are 50-54 All would have had conical top on burners..I find the (Lamp Reference Gallery) and the ((lamp-reference-library)-subscribers-only) very useful for dating
Hum.. Interesting... About what date was the pressed brass burner introduced? Only there's an advert for Tilleys dated 1955 (reference library) showing one of these heaters with the flat top burner?

Thanks Jeff ; I really don't know about dates and I know Tilleys can be confusing.. Even using Both burners in one advert!! The earliest advert for the Ambassador with the flat top I found was dated 1953?
Thanks guys. I think lm getting nearer. If I’m right you’d saying the centre one should have the wooden handle. So is that another Tilley cost saving exercise. Jeff there are no date stamps in any of these, but I also have a chrome de lux dated 10/65, that has a plastic grip on the handle, & imho poorer quality fount
Hello Malcolm, I'm not certain when Tilley started using that all metal handle, but I have seen it on that period of tank before, so it's correct for that heater and the first two links below show other examples and there is also other relevant information shown throughout the topics. In my opinion, those flat top burners date from the late 1930's and they were used for a considerable amount of years.
Thanks Jeff, yes that's the one I saw!.. To be fair it was a time of austerity and they did what they could to keep things going.. a very busy time for them. I remember my Mum saying as how rationing got much worse after the war... :/

Odd thing with these tanks used on the R1 and table lamps from 1950 to around 1959/60 is that so far I don't know of any with a date stamp in the base. There should be perhaps because around half the period was when the lanterns were date marked and you might expect the tanks with the logo and company stamped in the base flange to be dated but as far as I know none of them are. ::Neil::
