    I have noticed that in the reference gallery, a few Tilley Pork Pie X246 have got brown hoods on them did they come out like this?
    I was also wondering, did they ever come out with a black hood on them from the factory as well?
    Thanks.

    It seems that most if not all Export Tilleys were black hoods from 1954 246 onward

    I do not remember seeing any ad or catalogue showing the porkpie 246 with the newer type hood whether it be black or brown.

    Had another look tonight.
    Maybe, maybe not.

    Nope.
    Found a clearer picture showing the porkpie hood.

    @Buggerlugs

    By far the overwhelming proportion of all X246 Tilleys imported into Australia had black hoods (after the initial “pork pie brass hoods).

    The enamelled steel hood sometimes appear on very late (?1949) editions of the “pork pie” X246s. Then (1949/50) came the speculum X246 (sometimes called the De Lux). These were exported to Australia with black hoods.

    The steel enamelled hood first appeared with “one lip” then with two. The exact timing of the “two lip” hood is elusive, but I speculate it was around the mid to late 1950s, but I’m not certain.

    Cheers

    Tony

    I have heard talk of the Pork pie version 4 which came with the steel hood and brown enamel (never black).

    Yes.

    Neil (@Mackburner) has the X246 “pork pie” with brown enamelled steel hood in the Pressure Lamp Catalogue.

    The “pork pie” X246 does turn up with a black hood here in Australia from time to time, but hoods are easily replaceable items.

    Neil has the black hood as first matched with the speculum X246.

    So is it fair to say that, these pork pie with a black hood are a replacement hood only not factory released?

    @Buggerlugs

    That would be my conclusion based on Neil’s PLC, and his listing the last variation of the “pork pie” X246 as having the brown enamelled steel hood.

    Cheers

    Another example of Tilley being lazy in their catalogues.
    For so many porkpies to be found with brown hoods (single lip and double) they had to have come out of the factory like that for a time.
    Not finding them in ads or catalogues is not at all a surprise.

    Has anyone else seen the porkpie 246 with the brown hood in any paper ??
