I saw this Dietz 999 New York, USA blue lantern today. Missing the globe. Is this a reproduction? If not, can you still find globes and what color would it be? I did a search online and saw a green 999.
I have one of these and the originals can be dated as per the attached pics. I’m not an expert with these American lamps but it looks a bit new to me...
It does look in good condition, but perhaps these were still being made into the '70's? Similar wick lanterns over here still turn up in time warp condition. I am sure that there will be folks that will know more and , like Gary, may even have one or two? I think they are both great looking and practical lanterns
In the mid-1950s Dietz moved production from NY USA to Hong Kong and later still to mainland China where Dietz lanterns are still made today. As this one still has "New York USA" on its top I'd think this is produced at the latest early 1950s. I don't know if the Hong Kong made ones still had this stamped on their tops. The quality of the Chinese ones is not bad but the Vesta I have blows out with the slightest breeze. Construction on that one is simplified to reduce cost I think, but it is now a lantern that cannot be used in windy conditions. (but it still looks cute! )
