    Sometimes things translate differently?
Words like “ is this of value?” doesn’t necessarily mean “how much is this worth” .. ? It is often taken as , “is this worth saving?”
Just another view, my tuppence.. for what it’s worth...

    Hi @Nigel Green .
Start with 3 x seal kits (fettlebox good as are a few others). The trick is to get Viton rubber not ordinary. Replace the pump washer (order if not already in the seal kit) All yours have the small filler cap (important) other seals are all the same.
For mantles - take your pick but the orignals are V42 but there are options open to you. I would suggest if you cant find V42 getting the equivalent from the base camp. they need a hole in the top and the bottom. the V42 and equivalents come ready tied to the correct diamter. Others are loose but will work just as well.

Some like to change the "wick" - or pre-heater material. The originals are asbestos, the replacements kevlar. I get them from Julian Lands to be found on Ebay.

You look like you need a pre-heater spirit cup and a glass/globe. You may wish to look in the rest of the shed first ?, but base camp often has second hand stuff so you may be lucky to get one. Sometimes they come up on Ebay too. As you have three you have time to wait for a pre-heater/ M320 globe to come up. You can always swap the bits over while fixing up the next lantern.
Hopefully your vapoursisers are OK - these are getting a bit "hens teeth" and the prices can be silly. If you don't already know about cleaning them search cleaning vapourisers on this site.

There is lots of data on this site and many people who will jump in and help you (but do post photos)
You can also take solace that years after leaving the army, you will train yourself on the proper use of "Lantern, Kerosene, Lightng for the use of "

    Happy fettling...
    Chris

Yet, according to you, censorship "reeks" and is something you find distasteful. You can't have it both ways, Mike! :)
For information, here's the site's policy on valuations:-

VALUATIONS – SITE POLICY | Classic Pressure Lamps & Heaters

I've NEVER asked for an outright valuation here although I do recall a discussion recently about the "remarkable 320" where I posed a question regarding eBay strategies for listing such a lamp in a somewhat playful or mischievous manner, simply to make a point. I think you probably took it at face value (no pun intended)...

David, do not mix two different things up.

I consider censorship as something any moderator can do without the paranoia and suggestion this practice belongs to a totalitarian society. That does NOT mean I therefore accept gladly the appliance of it as in this case, which, I repeat myself, I find at odds with many such questions being asked before and NOT removed.
Hence my statement that this was a first for me I am aware of.

What do I need to explain to you further David? In the relevant thread I was giving examples of fixed prices on Ebay, something that seemed to confuse you.
These prices I quoted were NOT valuations, and I was not going to give you one here, and I explained why.

So all this was 'tongue in cheeck'? You did not ask for a figure at all?
If I understood you wrong, you could have, but did not, point this out there and then.

You're right Mike, I probably should have put ;) at the end - which I usually do. My apologies.

We're obviously not understanding each other about what you call "fixed prices on Ebay". As far as I can see there are none. When I finally get round to listing my Vapalux 320, I'll set a starting price of 99p and a BIN figure, yet to be determined. My point is that it's ME who sets the Buy-It-Now amount, not eBay or anybody else - it'll be nowhere near as high as the ~£395 you mentioned; neither will it be as low as what I paid for the lantern. The point is, I'll choose whatever figure I like. If it sells for that, good. If it doesn't, the market will decide on the sale price at auction end.

As far as "censorship" goes on CPL, I'd prefer to call it 'editing' - and I imagine the Admins would prefer to think of it as such. I don't think there's any censorship here - say what you like in The Open Forum as long as it's within the forum rules and the bounds of decency and good taste. Just my opinion...

David, no problem, but thank you.

You make something clear here as far as the fixed prices on Ebay go.
Ebay, being it the british, italian or dutch version, is not a seller, but a selling platform, and thus sets no prices whatsoever: the sellers do.

Plenty - in fact the most - offerings of Vapalux 320 lamps are offered for sale by various sellers, for a fixed price in 'buy it now' form, as opposed to put up for auction. I simply was refering to those.
I am non-plussed that you still "see none" and your determination as to set a price yourself seems like kicking in an open door.

As for the interpretation of the word 'censorship', I very much prefer to call things for what they are.
To me, a horse is a horse, not an euphemeric 'four-footed animal'.
Also, even a mild editing fits perfectly within the definition of 'censorship'.
Regardless, removing part of the text from a submitted question on this forum really surprised me, as I find it a rude act that cannot be explained imo by the text which was removed. It was not offensive or rude, so
I do not care if such an act of removal can be backed up by any rule or small print. It did and does not make sense at all.

That removed text was plainly asking for monetary values with the intention to sell.
That would not be the first time, in fact a similar question was asked the same day by someone else.
Nothing disturbing to it, and usually answered by any of us that "we do not give evaluations" or by similar wording.

I thus fail to see any ground to remove it, and am also perplexed should any of us have 'alerted' a moderator as you yourself suggested.
What are we - a kindergarten?
I will not speculate on why this happened - leave that gladly for someone else to ponder on - and now simply want to be done with it.

    Mike

Well, I didn't see the text that was removed but it seems clear that some sort of valuation was asked for. Thus it contravened the Site Policy for Valuations - see the link I provided in post #33 - and was edited / amended. As you say, it couldn't have been done by the original poster because of the time elapsed hence my supposition that it had been reported to the Admins by someone (not me) and subsequently altered. I guess whichever of the Admins it was, applied a 'light touch' to the moderating rather than going the whole nine yards and locking the post. Well done that man!

I've been speaking English for the best part of 70 years now and I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that 'censorship' definitely has negative connotations and is to do with suppression of content on the grounds of obscenity, threat to security etc. Merely editing to maintain a post within the site rules and policies is a horse of a completely different colour. I guess we'll have to differ on that... :)

:-k If I write 'I hate bigots!' would that contravene the Site Rules? Just idly wondrin'...

It's not against the site rules to ask for a valuation; but posts that do should, according to the site policy be locked.

The site owner can do pretty much as he or she see fit - and I have no problem with that; no valuations of pressure lamps is hardly an infringement of human rights. But the explanation is bunkum:

This policy has had to be adopted because the value of an item is determined not only by age, condition and perceived rarity, but also by how many purchasers may be interested in it at that specific time.

Supply and demand, as well as age and condition etc are factors to be taken into account in providing a valuation and not reasons why a no valuation policy has to be adopted.

Well I finally got around to listing my remarkable Vapalux 320 on a well-known auction site. What a pain it was getting it to accept the method of delivery I prefer and I'm far from convinced I've succeeded but we'll see.

Regarding setting the BIN price, the auction site suggested an amount based on previous sales but then advised that I set it lower than that to attract buyers. So I did...

Not wishing to fan the flames here but out of genuine curiosity the replacement costs of some peoples collection of lams must be quite high now, does anyone list them on their insurance? A fire or theft could leave them well out of pocket, and would the insurance accept that to replace a 50 year old restored paraffin heater may incur a cost of < £100.

Or would the new for old people just say not available so here is £2.50 which was the cost when new.
Has anyone experienced this kind of situation?

I've no idea, Ray. My lamps have always been on the general household insurance.

What's more worrying for me is that I've been ploughing the funds accrued from my lamp and lantern sales into one of my other hobbies - philately. Now I really need to sort out the insurance for that collection.

Well, that's proving to be no end of fun - hours of amusement have been had! Since someone bid the starting price of 99p, the BIN price disappeared - so that was all a load of phooey.

    C'mon fellas - surely it's worth £1.04...

Brilliant help on the lamps. Looking to get parts now. I will hopefully get some pictures up once they are up and running.
