This version looks very interesting. I’m wondering why they were produced like this, perhaps production cost savings? How would one service the pip in the control cock? Just curious Cheers Pete
Hi Pete, I've always called this one my transitional EX. Like the EX4, the control cock is fixed and does not have a seal. This means the fuel pickup is not reachable so Tilley made the tube thicker and a bit shorter to help prevent blockage. I have seen a lot of paper saying the EX4 was made as a cheaper alternative for the export markets. After seeing retailer price lists and marks ups, I believe this was all marketing hype and probably not cheaper to make at all.
Hi Anthony In my old industry, manufacturing components to save some cost can actually cost more in the end. Cost more in subsequent maintenance, time and more importantly, customer satisfaction and the allied repeat business. Sometimes, the accountants, read "bean counters", make decisions that aren't engineeringly sustainable or wise. However, your lantern is certainly an interesting example, a good to have. Cheers Pete
Someone here was apt to say that Tilley sacked their last engineer in 1956 and replaced him with an accountant. Probably not actually true but it neatly explained the way Tilley seemed to change their business model in the mid-'50s...
