Hi all, saw this in the second hand shop today and wondered if it's a x246 with a replacement earlier hood, or did some come out of the factory like this? I can't find a pic of any in this configuration. Cheers
Definitely an X246 “Pork Pie”, late 1940s, with substitute hood; but the hood looks Tilley, but I’m not able to ID the hood properly. If you see it again, look to see if the hood is cobbled together from a PL 53 or EX100 or similar, and whether the enamel inside is white or the same as outside. Cheers Tony
Thanks Tony, the hood looks just like the one on my EX100, but I didn't see what colour it was inside but I'll have a look in the weekend when he's open again Cheers
Hi @Brian Reynolds I think I can see a weld on the side so pretty sure someone has cobbled a utility lantern together ... Not sure if that is the burner from that hood so perhaps the burner is the original one as there doesn’t look to be enough room for the PL air buttons? Interesting bit of history... not sure how much the price tag equates to in pounds?
I read the tag as 65 Aussie Dollars so £35.61 or 41.41 Euros. Of course, the price on the tag is only the starting point for negotiations...
Hi @podbros , it's $65 which is about 35 pounds and I was going to offer him 50 which is about 27. I had a bit of a look under the hood and it's got the 3 air pipes or whatever they're called but it's missing a couple of buttons
Thanks @Tony Press A bit too steep for me.. thinking more like half of that especially as there looks to be solder repairs to the thread spigots.. not sure if they would come down that far though unless you bought more things? Thanks Brian Good luck with things Regards Pb
I believe it's not a PL53 hood, if you look closely you will see the globe wire hanger for an EX, PL53 never had that clip for a globe wire hanger, also the colour and I suppose I would say the snake like pattern on the hood is definitely an EX design, I have many EX hood with that same design.
I would buy it that's for sure, it's a frankie. Also I would keep as is, that sure is someone's initiative well done and saved, I'm sure it will work even better with the air buttons of course.
Ok, I went down today and grabbed it. The fount was about quarter full of what looked like muddy water that stank, gave it a bit of a clean out, made new seals for everything as they were all had it. It was missing the plunger thing on the bottom of the valve assembly but I've got an old parts one so used that, couldn't figure out how they pre heat so I jammed an old alladin 1a cup on a 1/2 socket and slid it over the vaporizer and after about 5 minutes of orange smokey flame it took off! I've never had a working Tilley before so pretty happy. Are they supposed to have a pre heat cup? My parts one hasn't got one either Cheers Trip home socket with Aladdin 1a cup hissing away
Yeah I offered 50 bucks and his hand just about dived into my pocket so I should have said less haha but never mind. I've got to get some more double ended mantles now as I want to give the vaporizer a good soak and clean up and I've only got one left. As mentioned the hood is the same as my ex 100 and welded to the other piece Cheers
Very slowly lift the hood straight up off the vaporiser and you wont break the mantle, I take my hoods off all the time and haven't broken one mantle yet, then leave the hood on its side or upside down.
Look here hood completely together with mantle on. hood off. Or you can rest it on the globe. Now all back together and no broken mantle. Easy as mate.
Like it, not knowing much about Tilleys I've got the bottom of the mantle too far down. I take it that's the hood mines supposed to have. How are you supposed to pre heat them? With a blowtorch or something? Cheers
Yes that's how the hood should look and you use a methylated spirits pre burner looks like this. Soak in methylated spirits clip on vapouriser and light for about 1 to 2 minutes or until the methylated spirits is just about out.
Oh, I see it's clear to me now, I see plenty of cheap newer ones for sale so I'll keep my eye out Cheers
Don't leave it in the methylated spirits as it will destroy it in the long run, just put methylated spirits in a jar and put the metho burner in and out as required.
