Hi, when I was at our local rubbish tip the other day I found a Tilley lamp with the stamp under the base stating 859xa. I have fallen in love with this lamp and I am starting to refurbish. The hood has a little bit of rust on it, but don't want to replace it due to it wouldn't be original. I have just ordered a seal kit for it with a pre burner. I paid $2.00 au for it. Now I am looking for other examples here in Australia. I think I am addicted. What other brands exported to Australia are collectible that you can buy replacement parts for ?
Difficult to say without a photograph of what you have, but given the date, the probability is that it's a Tilley X246. Tilley may have stopped calling them the 'Guardsman' by then, but generally, I think most collectors refer to them as that to distinguish them from the earlier 'Pork-pie' varieties. I do anyway, for what that's worth... Personally, I wouldn't be bothered about what other people consider collectible or not - if I like it, I collect it! Anyway, if others don't collect it, then I get it cheap - as did you, BTW - well done!
Thanks - it's a speculum plated Tilley X246 'Guardsman' and very nice, too! 8) BTW, what you need to do to get the image to appear in your post is to click on 'Full Size' in the File Manager i.e. the page where you add images. Just follow the text in red and the image will show up and people won't need to click on the '+' sign. I'll report your post for you and one of the Mods will see to it...
