Hi, I have 3 Tilley X246B's that have worked perfectly with good old Esso Blue & Alladin Pink. However, my local paraffin supply is now limited to the greenhouse stuff from Paracene & Bartoline. Despite complete overhauls including new mantles and vaporiser tubes, they now burn with a pulsating glow and slight flaming at the top of the mantle. The common denomenator is clearly the fuel. Is greenhouse paraffin likely to be the cause? I've been told that "Paraffin Extra" should do the trick. What do you guy's and girls think? Incidently, my Primus, Optimus and Shinabro stoves don't seem to boil as quickly as the used to. Maybe for the same reason? Many thanks, Bosun.
Hi Bosun welcome to CPL usualy pulsating could be a few things like air leaks the upper burner at the top of the hood that the mantle is tide on to is blocked faulty vapouriser dirty fuel, with the new paraffin you have purchased it may well have a higher flash point and may need more preheating, which to me sounds like the problem as all three are performing like it since the change of fuel,i would make sure the preheating torch is throughly soaked in meths while the torch is preheating make sure the control cock is off and add ten strokes on the pump just as the torch is burning down open the control cock and pump up to full pressure slowerallowing the vapouriser to get reraly hot or could try two preheats,it may well be a good thing to flush out the tank of old fuel as it may be contaminated, all so a very good point is to filter the paraffin when adding it to the tank if you have not got a tilley filter funnel, what i do is to use a small plastic funnel lined with a paper coffee filter,
Try and get some 28 secs central heating oil, this is kerosene, take some drums to your local fuel suppliers.....
