Is it possible to get longer handles for certain lamps? I have an Anchor 909 and quite fancy the idea of carrying it through the woods on a night walk, but reckon I’d end up burning my hand off after a few minutes.
What solutions have I got, asides from wearing oven gloves??

Well, I don't know of any commercially available extra long handles for Anchor lanterns but as they are basically cheap plated steel with a loop around a threaded fastener I would be tempted to make my own.

Alternatively, some sort of metal shield fixed between the two arms of the handle might help deflect the heat?

Ahaa, what you need to find is a nice little Tilley AL620, AL15A, maybe an SL61 although they aren't as rugged.
    I use my AL15A throughout winter as a portable/work lantern 8]

You could make a London-Transport Tilley style one, or a Vapalux HD44 style one from a spare Anchor 909, that would be a fun project! :content:

I’ll sell you a custom made handle if u like?? ;)
As already said, it’s fairly simple to bend some suitable rod to extend the handle or if that makes it too long then the heat shield or the glove :)

Lanterns are a great companion on a stroll.. I’m sure there are other posts but I remember a winter walk by @presscall where lantern and stove are used?

    Go for it

I would think as long as you’re walking along any heat coming off the top would dissipate as you trotted along.
If you stand in one place hold the lantern just about any of them will burn you!

Well remembered @podbros Yes, THIS post, using a Coleman 226. I used it suspended from a tree branch to illuminate my makeshift ’camp’ in a dark spot in the woods while I cooked and brewed up. So I didn’t walk with it hand-held for any distance.

I have done a night walk with a lantern though and that was with an Optimus 930. As @george has suggested, the heat didn’t conduct to the bail to any uncomfortable degree on the move.

Walking in a forest with a lantern is very enjoyable. The spread of light is much better than a torch.
I usually don't find the rising heat a problem and actually quite nice in winter. With the odd lantern where heat is a problem I just wear a leather glove.
But as said, a longer one can be made.

Ah, yes a heat shield might be something I could rig up!

That’s good to know! I thought that if I kept moving the heat buildup wouldn’t be such a problem, but I haven’t tried it yet.

I guess the 350cp are the same height as the 500cp versions.
I carry the 500cp with the stock bail without any problems so why should the 350cp being to hot? Do you think it is to hot to carry or do you experience it?
Like said, heat will "blow" away by any movement of the lantern or you have to make your own handle.

I have Petromax lanterns which have stock or on request longer bails and these also have a wooden grip.

It was after I’d had the lantern hanging from the ceiling in my shed that I noticed how hot the handle got. I lifted it down from hook and thought “how am I supposed to carry this??”

Aha... my guess is it won't be anywhere near as hot on a walk.
