Decided it was time to tackle this lovely little lamp, so after a clean and basic service it passed its leak test in water. Fired it up first without a mantle and thought it looked ok so fitted a Veritas 3776 (200CP) mantle and burned it off then proceeded to light it - 3 minutes pre-heating then 15 pumps and it lit no bother. There was a little flame outside the mantle (should you expect to see a little or none) and after a period I noticed a small leak from the excenter nipple area. With these issues I decided to break it down again and recheck all connections and this morning started it up again and had worse results than before I damaged the mantle when working with it which is why it’s missing in the later photos. I would really appreciate any wisdom you lovely people are willing to share regarding my next move - jet?, mantle? etc
Hi Jeff, I am fairly happy all was tight enough. There was no leaks when I dunked it in a bucket of water and rechecked tightness this morning so I may need to look at ordering a new jet. Thanks
30-40 pumps on a 3/4 full tank is what is in the original instructions I believe. In the picture where you have blue flamelets the flames are jumping off the nozzle. Where you have orange you have flames touching the nozzle. Possibly a sign of low pressure with no mantle fitted. A new jet never hurts tho..
@Fireexit1 you’re right about the number of pumps and that’s actually the amount it had. Made a typo 15 should read 45. The blue flamelets were yesterday as I checked it and the orange today so maybe different pressures. There was periods of blue flamelets today also but then every 5-6 seconds a large ball of orange flame as seen in the last picture would erupt from the nozzle.
Unless it is "pulsing" I would suspect carbon shuttling up and down the vapouriser. I have found the bicycle brake cable trick helpful in clearing them out. Also make sure your tank is clean inside and your paraffin is filtered. I picked up a Hipolito automatic once and it actually had fine gravel in the tank... Also when you move the control wheel can you see the needle pop out of the top of the jet ?
Tank is clean, paraffin has been filtered and I’ve took the vaporiser apart and had a wire in without really seeing any debris. The needle pops through the jet fine. The lamp ran pretty well last night for a short period with the only issue the slight flaming outside the mantle and a small leak from the control wheel region. The issue with the flaring started today after checking the lamp over and tightening up the connections and seems to be getting worse the more times I try it
@stuartc , did you put the wire in the loop ? Carbon is also deposited in the loop, and the orange flame is typical of this phenomenon.
Hello @Sellig33 . Yes I had a wire right round the loop and could feel no restrictions nor did I see any deposits come out
My last thought is "back burn" where the J tube might be seen to glow after a while. Otherwise I am afraid it does rather sound like a new jet could bring results Chris
@Rickylee @Fireexit1 thanks guys everything else seems ok so a new jet is the next logical step. The J tube did change colour but I think this was only as expected due to the heat. I wouldn’t say at any point I thought it was glowing red
@stuartc don't suppose you've got a spare globe knocking about for one of these have you? (Probably already know the answer but still worth an ask lol). Cheers.
