Today blew my mind. I went on a road trip to look for lanterns and found my two bucket list lanterns in the same place! A Tilley Pork Pie and a Coleman 242. The 242 appears to have had some modifications (ball nut, cleaning leaver, preheat cup from a Handi perhaps). It doesn’t have the early handle but I have one of those so it will get one!
I bought it that quick Tony I’m only now discovering some of the nice features. The ‘Tilley Lamp’ lettering is in nice condition too @Tony Press
That’s a very fine example. It’s a finger burner, though! That’s why the short handle was short lived. Cheers Tony
The 242 is interesting as well… looks like it was a regular user and someone converted it to run on kerosene (I wouldn’t want to run it on Coleman fuel either given is has no shut off or even the pump pin found on the 242A)
They both look viable and the tilley is a great example -the preheater cup on the 242 looks very Veritas like.
I'm pretty sure the preheater cup started out on a Handi. If you want to run it on kero you should source a proper Coleman part. Probably from a 201.
When it comes to preheating the Tilley, you'll find it easier to attach the meths torch if you turn the insect shield the other way up.
Here’s the 242 after a quick tidy up - perhaps blind luck that the thread someone added to the vent rod fits a modern ball nut! Photographed next to a 242A for reference. When I fix it up properly I’ll post in its own thread Shorter pump cap on the 242, with no pin retainer on the plunger Coleman logo on the 242 valve wheel, not on the 242A
