Hi everyone, I bought a large quantity of Tilley parts off ebay last week and in the box was this hood. It came with a light covering of surface rust but nothing major. I have given it a good polish which is why it is quite shiny now. I can't see that the enamel has been removed as I would have thought that would be quite difficult and there are no traces anywhere on the outside, however the inside is enamelled. There is also a distinct lack of major pitting like you see on ones where the enamel has come off through heat. I don't know anyway so perhaps someone else will be able to tell. Although it does kinda look the part even if it isn't . Regards Matt

Hi Netsniper, I think any chrome that was on it is long gone. I have just polished up what was left on the buffing wheel to get a chrome like look or as it has been called "poor man's chrome" . Hi Jeff, I have seen a few of the chrome topped lamps around but have never bid high enough to own one. My main query on this one is why there is a thin coat of enamel on the inside. Is it possible that it is early on in the production of this sort, and only got half done?
Hello Matt, I'm not sure, but it could be a failed plating, but with Tilley one is never certain, Jeff.
That plated hood Tilley did was in the 1970s when the three day week was causing production problems. They were always all chrome plated never half done. The chrome plating was not highly polished but just took on the surface finish of the steel so they actually look like bare steel rather than a bright shiny finish. If the plating you have is bright then it is an aftermarket addition which would explain the enamell underneath. ::Neil::
