How should I repair this crack? I was thinking caswell coating the tank. I was burning it this way but it was seeping out of that small crack.
I can't tell the extent of the crack from the pictures alone. Usually, it is not advisable to repair a compromised fount, particularly when using highly volatile and flammable fuels like Coleman campfuel, light naphtha or gasoline. If its just me and if the crack doesn't appear too serious, I'd still give it a try using soft solder as a first approach. Some acidic flux might be needed for maximum effectiveness. With that, the solder should completely wet the metal and flow nicely to fill it up. On its own, the basic solder should also hold up to pressure. I would prefer solder or brazing for the primary repairs. These metal-to-metal type repairs are usually the strongest besides welding. Not all founts could be brazed or welded because the high heat would cause other solder joints on the fount to melt. I would consider Caswells as a secondary reinforcement only when the above primary repairs are already holding well.
Thank for the reply. The crack is so small a hair beside it is bigger. Would it flow into such a small crack or do I make the crack bigger?
Looks like the tank/fount has taken some impact just there ? That may be what started it.. If you do go down the drill and dremel route you have to be absolutely certain that you have found the start of the crack.
Daniel, Presscall has pointed you in the right direction. A solder repair and use the Caswell as a secondary seal. I'm not sure what Colman has used to attach the filler spout. So try not to apply much heat to the filler and use a damp rag to help control heat.
All went well. I soldered it then checked for leaks in the sink. It leaked so I tried again and got that solder to flow good this time. In the sink no leaks and good pressure. So I coated tank and lit it. It burns good, I have had two tanks of fuel through it already.
Sorry one more thing if anyone is wondering. I did use a dremel and cut the crack bigger but took no pictures. Just like loco7lamp pictured in his repair.
