Hi fellas this is my SDR that fell from a great height 3m , smashed my original globe bent the font at the cock valve dome, broke the cage stem rods and bent the ring frame and the burner hood. I was devastated. It’s taken a few months to get over it but here’s my total rebirth. I first dismantled everything. I started wit the font, it needed some gentle perseverance back into shape it can up hood, better than expecting. Next I had to see what could I do about the frame stems / legs, bent and broken threads at the font/snipped off 3 Not having access to much I have to be resourceful,I found that Austramax pump shaft was as close to the Tilley thread diameter. I found a donor. I straighten out the stems, cut the last thread off, cut 4 pieces to use as replacement parts. I machine faced each rod and re drilled with 4mm drill. I silver soldered the donor in, re machined the stems to size so they all looked smooth and clean. I used a M5x.8 die and cut new threads , I the cut them down th suit the depth of the bungs on the font. I then re tapped the bungs on the font with a 5M x.8 tap, it has worked out well I straighten out the frame ring re premed the tops to retain the top ring the top burner was easy to straighten out. I now reassembled the lantern I was happy and thought I had it in the bag. I did but I had air leaks two cracked seals on the leg bungs Back to the work shop, I gave the font to a fella to solder, it worked but the pump seal leaked and pressure pip leaked, I put my big boys pants on and soldered it my self, I amaze my self some times, it’s all good but the font needed re blasting cleaning and a re paint. Dunk test all good, Re prep and resprayed Pearl Black Looking very nice, reassembled, new SDR Decal And now some money shots Im impressed with my fettle skills. I see what others can do to get their lanterns to work and I think I can try and do that, It’s been an epic journey I’m happy I’ve restored my SDR better than before. Enjoy fellas Admin. If you want to move it to another classification it’s all good, very happy to share
@podbros . When I originally repaired the SDR the first time , it had one broken leg stem and two of the bung holes leaked the opposite side of the fuel cap.I tried to reheat the solder but only made things worse, I had the bungs silver soldered to stop the leaks, I repaired the the one leg in the same manner as above. After the great fall the bungs either side of fuel cap leaked I took it back to the fella he silver soldered them they didn’t leak but the fuel pump ring and the pressure pip leaked under pressure. I set about soldering repair they both have external soldering, I did clean it up to look better and tidy. I practiced soldering other things first to get a better idea of how it works.
Great! I always find that you can’t beat a bit of practice .. especially on nice things like lamps where most of it is on show. Soft solder is very fussy regarding cleanliness , so well done
Proper job Darryl ! Nice to see your excellent use of the skills you are developing. It always amazes me how inventive lantern owners are
