Hi fellas, not good news but what causes the globe to shatter, good one moment broken the next , it had been running for an hour before no issues
Sad, very sad mate. Maybe the glass was too tight in its frame and when the glass heated up, it expanded and subsequently shattered. Just a thought.
That's sad. I'm just a little curious on the way it shattered. Almost like tempered automotive glass. I've had glass globes that broke during use or while cooling down on lanterns but not in a way like the above.
That is sad to see but did you have a original glass and how thight was is mounted? It should have some space to expand.
So sorry to see this @Darryl Durdin Have only a leaning towards expansion over time and a tightly held glass. Was it a first time run? Had it been run before for a similar period of time? Had the mantle developed a hole through movement? How much movement had the lantern had in that past hour? These are the things I am wondering about. Like @MYN I am also curious about the manner in which the glass shattered. Scares me a bit too as I have only ever run my unit for perhaps 10 minutes and mostly in a shed. I may purchase an automotive safety glass special cut to use and keep the Tilley glass for display. I ponder if this idea would work or if the glass has to be heat resistant. I think in FL6 units I have seen circular cut replacement safety glass. Better luck Darryl with a replacement lens. iain

Does not look like heat-resisting glass to me. Borosilicate glass like Suprax or Duran break differently. (I tried it.) Have a glassmaker cut a pane of borosilicate glass. Judging the way it broke, I think there was a hole in the mantle so a sharp flame was directed towads the glass. This will also damage the best heat-resisting glass. Erik
Hi fellas, the glass was an original Tilley Henson, the glass had some movement it wasn’t tight. The lamp had been idle for 10 or more years, I replaced the gaskets/ seals, I used a generic two tied mantle, it flared up a bit when started but settled down to a good glow. I sat it down on the ground and checked on it every now and then, it was good. When I went to check on it I could smell the kerosene, I checked it and the globe had shattered, the mantle looks a bit sad and definitely soot inside the lamp and reflector. Maybe it had flared up big time, it still had pressure in the tank when released , picture shows some definite holes in mantle.
