Has anyone used a clear coat on there brass tanks and hoods? Will the heat melt it? I know that optimus lanterns had enamel hoods so what type of enamel is used to refurb? Thanks!
Hi erock welcome to CPL, i all ways use a clear coat laquer, on my brass tanks as it preserves the tank from tarnish. And all so protects the brass from chemical attack, like amonia which can cause stress cracking in sheet brass. which is a thing i have learnt on here and over at CCS, mostly all manufactures, used a coating of sorts to protect there brass tanks, either it was paint electo plaiting or clear laquear, if a brass finnish was required. The hoods were coated, unless electro plaited with a glass enamme,l that had to be baked on in a kiln. This is what makes it heat resistant
Hi eroc normal lacquer will not withstand the temperature that the hood reaches. That said I have seen clear engine lacquer advertised. I am not sure how that would look or if it would take the heat - anyone have any experience of it?
