Hello to you all, I've recently bought this Sievert lamp from a flea market.I would like to see it working. The tube videos are really helpfull and informative. But I can't find any info about models production years. So, does anyone know the age of the torch I'm posting here? Thanks.
HI Dda - others here will know more than I, but doing a google search for Sievert Blowlamps and then looking at the images can get you closer. I think yours should have a metal cover over the pre-heat pipes around the nozzle. http://blowlamp.co.uk/MY WEBS ~ Leaflets etc/Max Sievert Blow Torches and Furnaces.pdf
Welcome. We are really mainly lantern enthusiasts here. Try Blowlamp News edition 91 here. http://www.blowlampsociety.com/BN91.pdf There are a lot with a plastic pump knob about 1961 but who knows. The Serpentina 0 also has the exposed tubing for what it's worth. Good luck.
That is a handy website ! @Dda - you should be able to work out what it is and from that when it was made !
On later models. @Dda A view of engraving would be helpful. ‘Safe and Handy’ (in a square) disappeared off Sievert blowlamps after the 1920’s. That engraving is on this Sievert. Not a lot of surfaces aren’t engraved on that 1920’s example.
Thank you for your answers. I will attach few pictures with the engravings on my torch. It does have the 'safe and handy' logo but I can't say that it is the one before '20s, there are only three sides of a square, not a full four sides square.
I have one of these beautiful Sievert blowlamps which I'm working on. (Is it ok to discuss blowlamps on this forum?) The 'Stoves sister site' doesn't seem to cover blowlamps. Interesting how the fount on this says 'Benzoline' (petrol) yet the filler wingnut says Paraffin. Any comments? Looks like it's for Paraffin because of the pre-heater arrangement. Mine doesn't have this, which is consistent with it being for petrol. Is that 'HIL' or NIL? Mine is a APH which is for petrol according to the 'list'.
Well it is called the "open forum" for a reason . And futhermore I think we all are interested in anything that makes a light or heat without (or maybe even with ?) the use of electricity.. I am not an expert on these but I would suggest that somebody has lost the filler cap at some point and found another from a paraffin version. happy fettling ! Chris
On the second and third pictures posted by Dda, you can see the copper rod sticking out of the tank. This was an early safety feature for petrol blow torches. Petrol blow torches still need some form of preheating, though not as much. For the ones without a pump, it is also to create the pressure in the tank as well as heating the burner.
Ok so tomorrow I'll have mine ready for starting. What's the routine? How do I pre-heat it? (didn't realise petrol ones needed pre-heating) -Using meths in the trough around the big nut similar to a Kerosine lamp? (I'm a bit reticent to ask questions in case I might get 'flamed' by a certain person!!!)
It's two different lamps! The blowlamp of this topic is a gasoline/petrol one, and I can't see that it says paraffin on it anywhere. However there's also a totally different blow lamp posted in here, and that one is for kerosene/paraffin, and that one also has the text on the tank lid saying so. No, these models with an outside vaporizer (not preheat pipes) didn't have any cover. As already pointed out, this is the "Open Forum", so of course you can discuss blow lamps here. just as you can on the stove site, but there's "the Open Forum" is called "The Lounge".
Yes sorry Carlsson, perhaps I hijacked this post with info about my own Benzoline lamp. The OP lamp appears to be a petrol lamp but with a 'Paraffin' filler. But it's difficult to say what's what!
No! As I said; the original posters stove doesn't have a lid that says "Paraffin". It's the other, smaller one, Presscall posted that you can see having a lid saying "Paraffin". Which is as it should be, because that one is a paraffin lamp.
