I don't really need any more Guardsmen lanterns but this one dropped into my lap for very little money so I couldn't refuse, could I! New washers, frame respray to stop the rust and a mantle. That's all it needed and away she went. The speculum has seen better days but after a clean and polish, i think it looks OK. I fitted a home-made pre-heater cup I made for it. The plating is badly pockmarked but it doesn't notice that badly.
I have the exact same one that I need to get my hands on and get it back to life. Nice looking lantern Colin
Good work, when the plating is bad I leave it as a reliable lamp showing its age but one I polished back to brass. I soak the burner in vinegar and often find that clay looking substance the bugs leave.hone the pump.change the seals and it burns well without a mantle.
