@JEFF JOHNSON You lucky devil! Here in Norfolk we are lucky to get 2 inches and even this modest amount is enough to bring Norwich to a standstill. Jeremy
Hello Jeremy, it's wet snow and it's not lying yet and now it's raining and there is also a flying gale, Shetland's weather is very changeable, Jeff.
Hello Jeremy, yes, the snow cover looked bonny, but there was a flying gale along with it and the temperature plummeted. Today has been drier with sunny spells and it was delightful to see the sunshine and a blue sky, Jeff.
London too tonight. In contrast, 30-degrees C but overcast at my son’s local beach in Singapore earlier today. John
It's has reached the south too that is not so common. Wednesday 7/12/2022 was the coldest day here so far this winter, there was a flying gale from the north which brought Arctic blasts which cut through every layer of clothing.
We have been shovelling snow on and off for a month in Estonia. This week we have had 50cm with a big blizzard on Monday. Last year I almost was mowing the lawn in December.
They are calling for heavy snow here! That usually means four to six inches or more! I hate the stuff and when your 79 years you don’t want to shovel the stuff, it could kill you!
Hello, yes, there has been wide spread damage to the electricity infrastructure here in Shetland, power was restored in my area today/Friday at about 12.30 pm., it was off for 3 days and 20 hours. The power cut was caused by a flying gale which drove heavy wet snow before it and that stuff clings to the power cables and builds up on them and then it freezes and breaks cables and poles, hopefully the power will stay on, but there are still many homes without power in various parts of Shetland, the link below shows news stories about the situation. I don't know Jeff. We cut off the internet, you still posted. Then we cut off the power, and you still came back. You have the luck of 9 cats !
I am suprised most people don't have a small generator. Although I can also see why Shetland seems to have more than its fair share of paraffin burning equipment.
Many homes do have generators and that will probably increase now, the winters in recent years have been much milder and many folk are not as prepared nowadays. In the more traditional Shetland which I was born into folk had to prepare for the winter and they did.
Oh i thought it might be bad :-/ glad to hear you are ok there were heavy wintry showers here a week ago now but worse nearer the sea or rivers for some reason.. there was also some sea ice up the coast a little near freshfields Probably nothing like the sea ice some folks see but interesting
Thanks and apparently this weather is being caused by high pressure over Russia and Iceland which is forcing cold air to many places.
Power has now been restored all over Shetland and the link below shows the story. The repair crews did a splendid job in very adverse weather conditions and they have my gratitude and admiration. All power restored after SSEN re-connects 5,289 properties
I hope it doesn’t become a nuisance again .. currently got a fog coming off Liverpool bay.. ships have been sounding foghorns
We had some snow during the evening so I didn’t bother to look out at bed time. Apparently there were some awesome sightings of the Northern Lights over Scotland this weekend.
If there is still snow tomorrow then I will take some images, but it's raining just now. The Northern lights were seen here over the weekend, unfortunately I did not see them.
