So I got my first Tilley lamp fettled and pressure tested. The burner looks as it should (apparently) when lit without Mantle.

I tried a Gasmate double tie large mantle ( all I could get hold of in a hurry) with lack luster light.

so the question is what mantle do I need where do you all source your mantles from?

the Gasmate one is a poor performer in this lamp hoping for something better..

sorry for the newbie questions, thought best to ask the experts..?

    cheers

    Jody

Hi Jody, hope you had a lovely Xmas, Jody, just my opinion, others will have input, but i use Petromax 500cp double tie sometimes, when i can get Tilley brand at a good price i use them, but there are other non branded mantles that work well, D2 size are the larger type, another foreign brand i use is Butterfly, soucing them is a problem sometimes, Ebay, TW Sands Melbourne, and England, i have put a couple of links, hope this helps Jody, kind regards Frank

Surely there must be other places to get mantles from?

Have you looked into justmantles.co.nz Brian, they do a peerless dt 100 which they say fits tilley burners, I have not used these myself but other members may have.

@Mr cod Thanks mate I have well over 150 mantles, I was just trying to help @Jody as this is his first lamp that he is trying to get going.
I could give him a few to start but that doesn't help him in the long run.

I think you mean the DT140?

These days I just cut the bottom off any 500cp mantle I have available and tie the cut end to the spigot with some salvaged mantle string. Works a treat.

There is a seller in Australia on the Bay of Evil selling 2-tie mantles for Tilley. I’ve got the same ones, and they are good.

No not yet Xmas New Year got in the way lol.

I have a mantle running and it is not great but I think the vapouriser is not always delivering full pressure flow etc..

I think this because when I run it for a while and pump it up and start stop the light (pop) sometimes I get a bright light (white) with a louder hiss etc. I would call the light level acceptable but probably not as good as a real deal mantle…

I may have to have another look at the vapouriser as it’s not working right l, strangely it is consistently not working right and I can consistently get it to “pop” after it’s been on for a long time (like over 45 minutes).

Well, as long as you had a good time over the holidays, lol, Jody, Tilley vaporizers can be touchy, little jet hole at the top to enlarged with rust and ware, but yours sounds like a carbon build up inside problem, sometimes when this happens, that as it runs and heats up small bits of Carbon come loose and obstruct the jet at the top, sometimes you can clean the old carbon out with certain methods, other times they are to far gone and a replacement is the fix, i have a few Tilley's, they are not my number one lantern, so others here may chime in with the best way to decarbon a vapourizer, cheers Frank
