Hi all, the lamp posted here appears to have similar features to this one which I'm trying to date. I've just found it when clearing out my garage and now hoping to clean it up and get it back to its former glory. Any help would be hugely appreciated.
This Petromax 829 was built in 1972 in Altena/Germany. If this Rapid base did not have this soldered ring, (in the red circle) the lamp would be from 1962. 0723 means in this case week 7,year 1972,day 3. This code was valid from 1961 to 1972. According to my observations, 1972 was the last vintage that was still made in Germany. I never seen a 1973 Petromax, neither from Germany nor from Portugal.
This may be of help if you're not too familiar with Petromax lanterns, https://www.eschaefer.de/hobbys/starkl/px-rest.pdf Spares from Petromax Spares Price List
Takes a bit of effort to get running correctly if not familiar with them but easily one of the best lanterns. Plenty of parts available in Germany.
Sorry for jumping in and redirecting a old thread . @Reinhard If I understand correctly what you have written about the soldered ring in the rapid pre heater of the pmax ,if it did not have the ring then it would be from 1962 . My pmax 829 super rapid has that soldered ring and is dated 0721 , I worked that out to be Feb 1962 Monday . Here's a couple of pictures . Thanks marten
Oh ok , I'm surprised at that because I had two people from Petromax explain the date code to me ,it was them that gave me the 1962 date . Thanks for the info it's really appreciated Marten
