Tilley 246. I need help.

I need help. Is there an efficient way to loosen this nut on a Tilley 246. I have tried WD40, Karamba and heat with a blowtorch. It is firmly fixed.

It is alumnium on brass. Keep doing what you are doing, secure in the knowledge that that part is easy to replace, so even if it gets destroyed it is not the end of the world.

 

Remove the valve and vaporizer first. Then heat and cooling down.

 

Be carefull if you use heat. Too much heat will melt the solder which holds the inner piece in the tank. If all else fails, use a hacksaw to cut through the nut but keep the blade just off the threads. You may have to make two cuts.

 

I would avoid force and heat. I like the suggestion of @Henry Plews using careful hacksawing close to but just off the threads. Another option is to take it to an engineer with a suitable nut splitter (it’s a couple minutes job) and then as @Fireexit1 has mentioned get a cheap replacement; they are readily available. I can also help with one as I have a spare; PM me if needed.

In my opinion, I believe this was one of Tilley's ways to sell more lamps, because:

Brass is incompatible with Aluminum, per Mil-STD-889. The Aluminum will break down.
The aluminum will also corrode where its exposed surface contacts the brass plate because brass is more cathodic.
If you must use these two metals in direct contact situations, it is recommended that you put a non-metallic barrier between the two.

I have had this same problem a number of times, most times you can get the nut off, with patience and time.
Once I did what @Henry Plews said and that worked out, as I had spares nuts.
Another time I must have applied to much force and cracked the solder, which caused the control cock to just keep on spinning around and around, as far as l was concerned it was game over, as I also had spare founts to use.

I have had to carefully use the hacksaw method several times, when the cage ring is in that condition it's the only option, I use a junior hacksaw.
