Dear All, I would like to ask for your help/advice regarding Hasag 34 Spiritus. When I pressurize it and try to light it there is a hissing sound from the nozzle (air/gas gets out) but visible stream of fuel (pure methyl alcohol) spits/squirts out only from time to time (every 5-10 seconds), and only for a second or two. As a result the mantle and top of the lantern is then covered in flames and lights only from time to time for several seconds. 1. I am not sure if after preheating fuel from the nozzle should be liquid or gas. Now is mostly gas, but fire ball and light occurs when liquid fuel is getting out. 2. I even tried to directly light air/gas from the nozzle (flame from the torch directed on the gap between the nozzle and mixing tube) but it does not burn there. 3. Before preheating liquid fuel is geting out from the nozzle, afer several pump moves – that seems to be ok. 4. The lantern has new Petromax 150 top/inner casing 5. It has original Hasag 100SP nozzle 6. It has Petromax 250 needle 7. I use 200-300 Luxor mantle (presumably to big), but most likely that does not explain the problem 8. Situation is the same even after 2-3 preheating 9. The same situation is when gap was 7mm and now when I reduced it to 4mm. I have not tried larger gap between nozzle and mixing tube. I would appreciated any ideas, advice. This is just my second lantern I try to light, first alcohol one, so please be understanding for my lack of experience and knowledge. Hello. @Piotrek As far as I know, the Hasag 34 is a kerosene lantern. I've never seen the alcohol version. A picture of the lantern would be good. Tom
Sounds to me that the vaporizer does not get hot enough. Any kind of fuel should definitely be gas when exiting the nozzle. Have you looked at the alcohol; it should be at least 90-95% grade, and if there are remains of water from rinsing in the fuel tank that also could be a reason for the effect you described. Improper burn could will also be caused by too much air; usually alcohol fueled lanterns have air restrictors in addition to the bigger nozzle size. Just reducing the gap to 4mm will probably not be enough. My Hasag 102SP has a single air hole of 3-4mm, and my 300 CP Ditmar 519 for alcohol uses an air resrictor with 6 holes of 2mm each. So for a 100 CP alcohol fueled lantern I'd assume that two 2mm holes should be OK.
@Martin K. - thanks for suggestions. I reduced gap to approx. 2-3 mm. I can not reduce more because there is no more threading on the mixing tube. Result - when lantern is preheated only gas is hissing and no flames at all. When it is geting colder then liquid alcohol sometimes spits from the nozzle and there are cool looking flames when fired by torch (I do not put glass). Alcohol is 99% pure methyl. Any ideas what to do next? Maybe it is because that PX150 top is not designed for alco? At least it is looking pretty good-attached small lantern next to the big stove If I do not fix it, then one day I will try to use kerosene with 7-9mm gap. @Tom Pedersen - this is alco lamp - it is included in the HASAG gallery (sorry I do not know how to include link to that post here) Piotrek
That is correct. You will have to extend the mixing tube such that it covers the nozzle completely. In that extension you can drill e. g. 2 x 2mm holes, so you will have an air restrictor. You can see this in principle from this post about my Ditmar 509. My Hasag 252SP has a smaller tube that goes inside the mixing tube and is flared at the bottom so it fits over the nozzle. This also has a row of smaller air holes. It could also be necessary to put a heat shield around the burner so that the exhaust gases are directed more towards the vaporizer and the Preston loop. You can see this as a small dish in the photo of the underside of the inner chimney of my Hasag 1252.
Martin, you rise the fettling bar to another level for me I will prolong the threading on the mixing tube somehow and it will snugly fit the nozzle. Then I will be able to adapt gap and make holes if required. If not enough that dish should be easy to add - I can see similar dish on my PX 828 300HK. There is a "spirit adapter" to buy for PX. Will that brass gauze/net (part of that adapter) help in my case? Thanks a lot for help, Piotrek
@Piotrek That "spirit adapter" is designed for the 300/500 CP size lanterns and will not be of any use. I also doubt that the air restrictor can be made of brass gauze, since it will be difficult to adjust the correct amount of air. A few holes in a tube with the correct diameter sounds easier to me. I once made such an air restrictor from a short piece of copper tube with the inner diameter just fitting around the nozzle. So you will not have to modify the mixing tube. And this method allows for easy replacement in case the solution doesn't work properly.

I was surprised but it works! There is some pulsation, but I am more then happy considering the starting point of that former wreck and my lack of experience. @Martin K. - I would like to thank you so much for your help and professional advices.
