A friend just acquired this Hugo Pollak lamp. It's seemingly a gravity fed gas lamp produced in Vienna and has *IDEAL GLUHLAMPEN-UNIERNEHMUNG* HUGO POLLAK WIEN written on the collar of the burner. Any thoughts on age and history?
I never came across that name so far. But a quick search at espacenet brought up two early UK patents. I do not have the time to dig through the files right now but you will learn some facts about the person from the patent papers. The German words would read: IDEAL GLÜHLAMPEN - UNTERNEHMUNG (Ideal incandescent lamp corporation) 1441962456-GB189806174A.pdf 1441962472-GB190012505A.pdf Just found this nice young lady here: http://media.obvsg.at/AC10568379-4201 Kind regards, Erik
Ian, I found 4 ads (the same one) in the antisemitic hate sheet Deutsche Wacht of 1903. (Deutsche Wacht by Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) of the Antisemitic League not to be confused with Deutsche Wacht, a monthly on colonial- and trade politics). http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-JCPRKKBL/? get the PDF, the ad is on page 4, bottom/right. The text ads read: Neugeprägte Zwanzigkronenstücke glänzen nicht so hell wie das Licht der Ideal-Glühlampen. Illustrierte Kataloge versendet gratis u. franko die Ideal-Glühlampen-Unternehmung Hugo Pollak, Wien VI., Wallgasse 34 Mint twenty crown coins do not shine as much as the light of the Ideal Incandescent lamps. Illustrated catalogues available gratis from Ideal Incandescent light corporation, Hugo Pollak, Vienna VIth district. Wallstraße 34. There is another patent, filed 7. Nov. 1899: 1442048336-AT3991B.pdf , a device for cleaning gas tips of incandescent gas lights. Another patent on a device for spinning artificial silk (filed 5. June 1925) is connected with the name of Hugo Pollak but I could not find a confirmation of identity. Erik
I'm still searching about Hugo Pollak and his company. Got some information from the Vienna chamber of commerce. Unfortunately registration information only, no "technical" things. However, I found several ads with various lamp types in old newspapers. Here's one. :-)
